Compadre question

Will the compadre 7" coil work on other tesoros? Thinking of canibilizing one of mine, could use the pole for another detector setup Im building and was hoping to resell the coil.

And wired correctly it will work on all current Tesoro land detectors except the LST and Tejon.
JB

.....by just selling the Compadre and buying another used pole. Most dealers have old salvaged detectors laying around that you could scrap a pole assembly off of.

But while you're in the process of converting the hardwired coil to one with a plug, why not also add a jack to the Compadre control housing? This would make the Compadre housing & electronics much more appealing on the aftermarket. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> Maybe someone would like it to use for pinpointing or just working very trashy sites and they have a 4" coil to attach to it?

Something you have to experience to believe !
If you really want to butcher one down to size, it makes for one heck of a "pinpointer" too.

Thats a great idea Monte, thank you. Most compadres are only reselling for about $100 or so. I will contact tesoro about getting the connector for the housing and for the coil cable.

Tesoro wouldn't sell me a connector. Three or four years ago I closed the tailgate of my pickup on the connector on a Tesoro coil and bent it so it wouldn't screw on. I contacted a couple of dealers about getting a connector and was told I would have to get it direct from Tesoro. I emailed them about buying one and received a reply stating I needed to send it in. Called them and was told if I would send it in they would repair it but they wouldn't sell me the connector. I saw no need to send a coil in for a 5 minute soldering job and since the thread collar was only our of round I managed to round it up to where it would work.. Maybe you'll have better luck.

Just make sure you get matching male/female connectors that will fit the housing without interferring with internals, and be sure you are getting the right wiring in the correct opposing points on both parts. If I remember right, the color coding was different on the Amigo/Compadre coil wiring than on the standard coils, so you may have to do some cross checking with an ohm/volt meter to get things straight.

The above applies if you are just making the stock coil "removable", but if you are setting up the Amigo/Compadre for using other Tesoro coils, you will need to use the same kind of female connector they use on other land-based Tesoros and make sure the wiring is matched correctly so that other stock coils can be used.

I took the stock 7" coil off of my Amigo II and hardwired a brown 8" donut onto it, and the colors were the same on both coil's wiring and the match seems perfect. I use my modded Amigo II for almost all of my playground/sandlot coinshooting, and I used it as my only detector at a recent club hunt in Maryland with good success. I then took the male connecting plug that I removed from the brown 8" coil and installed it on the now-removed 7" coil and it works perfectly on all of my other Tesoros.

The connector is made by Switchcraft. An electronics supply company should be able to get the exact connector(s) you need.
All you would need is a sample (any land type Tesoro coil) and they would be able to come up with the correct connector. I believe there are some supply houses on the internet that can supply Switchcraft connectors. You might check them out.
I had a Switchcraft catalog, but can't find it. It has pics of the connectors and their configuration.

can be bought through "SWITCHCRAFT"
Do a google search for Switchcraft and you will find the appropriate part numbers.
If you will email me, I will send you the part numbers!!

....was several years ago, and the color coding on the coil cable wires was different than on another Tesoro coil I was comparing to at the time. I don't recall exactly what the differences were, but remember having to "match" the wires of differing colors to get it to work correctly. Might have just been a difference in cable wires from different production periods...... (?)

hi ralph!...in your opinion,(based on your experience with the compadre),can you use a faster sweep while hunting in the trash and get away with it
with either the silver OR the compadre with 4" coil on board?..this da**cz REALLY HAS to use a slower sweep speed to find anything with it!..the reason i ask is i'm thinking of acquiring either the 4" coil
or the 7" coil for my silver, and go hunt highly trashed areas like easements,or crapped out sections
of old parks with it!..also was wondering about depth
i suppose if i can get down 4 or 6" i'll probably get most of it anyway even if i CAN'T ground balance!
any idea what kind of depth i can expect?. (regards!)
john.

Hi John,
Some of my hunting buddies tell me I look like I'm swinging a $&%# GOLF CLUB hunting with the Compadre.... <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> You can actually swing it fast and low in alot of areas, but if you didn't, it would take you forever to cover any ground with the little 4 inch coil. When the trash is really thick though, I usually slow down and listen closely for coins right up next to the trash. Day before yesterday I dug a couple of 40s wheat cents in an area littered with aluminum bottle caps. The wheats were at close to 6 inches deep, while the caps were all within the top inch or two. There was alot of other junk too, but the bottle caps are usually the hardest to deal with.
The Silver should actually give you a little more depth and sensitivity than the Compadre when both are equipped with the 4 inch coil.... different circuitry between the two machines....but that can be an advantage OR disadvantage, depending on several factors. The Compadre also has the 180 degree discrimination that lets you accept all targets down into the iron range, but with either machine, you can max out the discrimination and still accept clad coins, most copper cents, and silver. The Compadre w/4inch can get coins in the 5 to 6 inch range, depending on ground mineralization, and like the Silver, is internally "pre-set" to deal with most ground conditions pretty well. Neither is going to be a "depth demon" using the 4 inch coil, but that is not really the intended purposed of this kind of set up. But I'm of the same belief as most experienced coin hunters that there are many more coins hidden due to trash masking than due to depth, though the old ones "might" tend to be deeper, again depending on your hunting area. Around here, it's nothing unusual to dig silver and indian cents at 2 or 3 inches because of the ground matrix. Not all old coins are necessarily "deep".
For the high trash areas you describe, I would strongly recommend the 4 inch coil. I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's one of Tesoro's best kept secrets...... <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)">

hi ralph!..the silver is my daughter's detector,and
never thought that it just MAY out hunt the cz!
however, because of the disproportionate amount of
aluminum trash everywhere,iv'e come to the conclusion
that asimple discriminator (2 filter design) MAY be the ONLY way to go! a detector that recovers quickly enough to isolate signals will probably be the hot
play from now on,and will probably end up keeping me
in the hobby!..ralph,is the 7" coil also a good choice<in that you can cover more ground with it?..
(regards!)....(hh!)....john

The 7 inch coil is a great all around coil and will give you a little added depth, but not near the target separation that the 4 inch will in heavy trash. You can also cover more ground a little quicker with the 7 inch. Your preferrence should depend on exactly what kind of trash conditions you plan on hunting in the most......moderate trash, the 7 inch would be fine....heavy trash, the 4 inch is the better choice.
Ralph

Your basic and original assertion about a Compadre/Amigo (or any other Tesoro, for that matter) with a 4" coil is absolutely INDEED a "sidewalk/parkway killer." However, you should have pointed out that the Compadre's stock coil is hard-wired in (and maybe the Amigo, too?), and it's physically impossible to put a 4" coil on a Compadre unless you go tearing things apart to solder and re-wire it for a new coil. Which also voids the warranty.
Which is one of the two reasons I always say that serious beginners should spend a few bucks more for the Silver over the Compadre.
