Compadre II?

After reading the forum here for some time, thought I'd throw this out there. With Garrett upgrading their Ace line so much, was wondering if, in addition to the basic one knob Compadre, an uplevel Compadre would work, or even a low end line of machines built off the Compadre and replacing the Micromax line. These would retain all the great features people like about it, the ED180, The excellent 12khz Disc circuit, but add certain things on top of it depending on the model like maybe adjustable sensitivity, ground balance, replaceable range of coils, even a tr discrimate circuit, some kind of pinpoint mode. What would be the ideal combination?

Well, after some time of reading various posts by Monte, Bill Buckner in the past, as well as a book by Bob Sickler, my idea was to take the Compadre design( not change the Compadre itself) with it's desirable features(ED180 disc circuit-so you can disc just the amount of iron needed, non boosted target report audio-so you can actually hear a significant difference in various targets, excellent target separation, very light weight). and just add a little more to it, to make something like the original Silver Sabre's & Bandito's, that some folks would really like to see come back. I guess I'm just curious for other people's idea's on, if Tesoro where to come out with an upgraded range of low end detectors(improved in the Tesoro way) Like Garrett has done, what would be the knockout combination of features. Just daydreaming here.

You are on to something. About 3 years ago I bought a Compadre for my daughter. I was currently using a Whites XLT Spectrum. Playing with my daughters machine I thought to myself damn! this is no ordinary toy it has real quality AND very effective discriminating technology built into a very simple to use package! I thought, If this low end machine is of such high end quality what are there better products capable of??

I now have two other Tesoros the Tiger (bought new) and the Tejon (traded for the XLT). I have not been able to give either one a serious days work out yet, but from what little I have played with both, I Know they are not going to disappoint me!

I noticed you posted the same question on a Tesoro forum and you'll probably get some responses saying Tesoros can do it. They can't, and that includes their latest models. Tesoros have been praised as having great target separation and for working well in ferrous trash. That's true, at least for some models, but none of the 7 or 8 I've checked could see a dime 3 inches under one nail, let alone under six. The best Tesoro for separating ferrous/nonferrous targets is the Compadre and it couldn't match the 1650.

"<b><i>If you have 6 nails evenly spaced what detector can see past them to see a dime about 3 inches below them? Let's say the iron nails are 1/2 inch apart and are about 4 inches or more long and the dime is directly below the nails. What detector will hear the dime and you would know it's a dime?</i></b>

That's the question the post you copied was in response to. Link to the entire thread below. The Compadre is a great little detector, For the price it has to be just about the best bang for the buck going, if you get a hot one. I've checked three and one of them had at least an inch depth advantage over the other two. Jim, a friend and hunting buddy, has the hot one. He had two higher priced detectors but sold one and traded the other to me for a Golden

Sorry JB, guess I should have gotten permission to copy that post. Not meant to be negative in any way. Just trying to support the idea that the Compadre technology could be built upon a little bit and expanded into a great line of low end detectors.

Your price estmate is not bad;I know there is more involved than mods on an IDX.Give it a try Mr Bill!

The Compadre is what it is. A low-cost, 'budge' unit that is simple to use. For those who appreciate its performance, that is due to the fact that it doesn't share all the same "Low-Noise/High-Gain" circuitry of most of the other

I was talking about is non boosted audio. Compared to the detectors above it(excepting the LST) does the Compadre have the Boosted blare-the-same sound at everything audio report like the umax's or the nice, non boosted target response of the earlier non umax bandito's, silver sabres and such, so you can actually read the character of the target you're over?

a nice modulated audio rather than the more saturated design of most of the other Tesoro's.
