Compadre help

I'm going to test out a friends compadre tomorrow, see if I like it, and maybe get one for myself. I was wondering, what level of discrim I should set it on that would be best for coin shooting? Also, how deep can I expect to pick up coins with it? I'm used to a simple beep-beep machine, I have a cheaper Bounty Hunter, so I imagine it won't be too much different. But, I have been told that the tesoro's are a bit better in the depth department. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

For coin shooting, I set mine just below foil so I won't miss the small 10k gold rings. I regularly find coins at 4-5" The thing about the Compadre is that it is less troubled by iron because it doesn't have the low noise, high gain circuitry as the other Tesoroes, and is good in target masking situations. Expect to find more nickels, as they are found more with the Compadre than any other of my detectors. To be honest though, it's more fun to experiment with this machine as some of the things it can do (like finding small gold chains while in low discriminate) are almost beyond belief. God I love this machine!

I also set mine just to foil and dig all strong, repeatable, coin sized targets. Size the target.
If you get sick of pull tabs turn up the disc, but If there's gold you'll miss it.

It will pinpoint very well on good targets....
Its not a depth monster... Its deep enough for most hunting...With lowest disc I've dug about 8" in mulch.... Higher disc and you'll can get up to 6". Most of your depth will be just like your Bount Hunter. Unless you're looking for deliberately buried or plowed over targets don't let depth be a major concern. My oldest coin find, 1796 large cent, was millimeters deep. I found 4 coins from the 1800's litterraly laying under dust on the surface. I love it when I read about people saying they'll ignore the shallow coins via TID because they believe all the good stuff is deep. It makes sense, but not all the good stuff is deep.

Personally in the junk infested sites I search I do better with a small coil and picking between the trash... Sonetimes I think the trash is the only reason anything is left for us to find.

I believe it's the best bang for buck detector. I always keep it with me stowed in the car trunk.

Good luck!

If your only coin shooting, you can set the disc to just crackle on a nickel, but you'll loose of course anything in jewelery below that.
Keep in mind then the knob may not be calibrated to the labels. On mine, I had to reset the knob, or get used to the offset.
If you use minimal disc, like iron, you'll find the Compadre is no slouch. A detector doesn't have to have all the bells & whistles which can confuse some or suck up to much time trying to get things set or trying to figure out what the thing is telling them - simplicity and effectiveness is where the Compadre is at. So simple it's fun to use.

If I have trouble with lots of tabs when using the Tejon I mark where the common tabs are hitting and just turn disc 1 up and check when I hit a target. I don't like to fool with disc 2 once I have it set where I want it.

there is indeed an element of truth in what you say about the trash
keepin' sites from being "wiped out!"..hence the saying.".no site is totally
worked out!"

Hey, thanks everyone, I really appreciate the help. I'll take all of your suggestions and put them to work today. I had no idea how small the coil would be, I bet it's great at picking through the trash.
