Compadre goes on a test run.........................:cam:

I had a long day to day. I hunted in the morning and hunted again after lunch. Bad part of the day was when I realized that I left most of my finds on the trunk lid of my car and drove off. I never found any of them:sad: There was about $2 in change and some cheep jewelry and come tokens. I had some other stuff, but to be honest with you, I can't remember what it was.

But it's not that big of a deal. There's more where that came from. And I did keep two of the more interesting finds. I also found some interesting coins at the last place I hunted. I get to keep thoes.:)

The first place was where I take all my metal detectors to test them out. It's in a park. It was the corner of a carnaval that closed down about 30 years ago. This place was beside an antique mary-go-round. Lots of trash was piled there and removed many times. There are metal post, pipes, reinforced concrete, wires, conduit, screws, nailes and just about any kind of trash in the ground you can think of. But I have made some nice finds there and not many people know about it. It's in the most hunted park in the state. That spot is my TESTING GROUND.

The Compadre was just great. I have never used a metal detector that does as well in trash. I've been putting off using it because I had a Euro Saber and an Eldorado to learn. Now that I started using it, I can't put the little Compadre down.

The womans belt buckle in the photo is probably about 30 to 40 years old. It was sitting on top of some old fine mesh zink galvanized fenceing. There was metal trash under and around and on top of the fencing. The Compadre picked that buckle out and gave a good response. It sounded like a digger. And it was.

I found at least 8 tokens. That's the most I've found at one time there. There were three different kinds of tokens. I lost them.

The Compadre pulled more coins than any metal detector I've used there. I lost them. But I did keep the womans belt buckle.

I also kept a gold plated piece off the old mary-go-round. The piece that looks like a golden flower is actually part of a decoration that adorned one of the horses on the mary-go-round. It is cast iron and gold plated. Look close it still has a few of the little white stones mounted in it.It did have larger red stones around the ouitside but they are all gone . The golden flowers were mounted to the cast iron horse at different points for decoration. The mary-go-round is restored and concidered a priceless work of art. It's the only one of it's kind in existance.

The last place I hunted was a tot lot I've hunted before and I had a few supprises there. In a small area I found two US mint $1 coins, and I found a $5 Mexican coin. It appears to be silver. Haven't checked it out yet. Found two tokens and a shinny magnet, a motor cycle, a buss and a button.

It was a good day even though I lost most of my finds.

HH,

WOW! You did have a great day! Is $151.00 too much for a new Compadre?

That's the going price.

They say that Tesoro will only let retailers mark off 20%. That is a 20% discount at $151.00. If you can get it for less than that, you really got a deal.

I guess you can tell, I'm tickeled pink with mine.:inlove:

HH,

Sounds like Compadre is doing well. Some neat stuff there
So if your Compadre has the 7 inch coil, and the current market Compadre has the 5.75 coil, has it crossed your mind that you wish you had the 5.75 coil on it? I wonder what Tesoro reasoning is to switch from the 7 to 5.75 besides maybe cost.
Since you are having a difficult time putting Compadre down, you'll need to dust off the others once in awhile.
What depth are you getting?

The 7" coil works so well I don't care whether I got a 5.75 except for weight. But lets face it. I got it almost as light as I can get it.

The depth isn't bad. It doesnt get as much as a Silver but it seems a comfortable depth to me. I am enjoying finding those things that hide form other detectors. It can really pick them out. The Silver can find things the Cibola missed and the Compadre can find things they all missed.

I got a new favorite toy to play with now.:)

HH,

What is your opinion on comparing the Compadre, say VS. the Fisher 1266X, or the Fisher 1270?

I don't know.

I tried to get a 1266. I had a couple of deals fall through. They said it works like a Tejon but doesn't cost as much and doesn't go as deep. I got a 1266 from a dealer. It didn't work. He had me send it back and I waited and waited. He said he couldn't figure out what was wrong with it and it didn't have a warranty.

I had bought a Garrett from him that I didn't like it. He sold me the 1266 for $210 and it was wore out and didn't work. I got upset about it and he ended up shipping me a like new Cibola. Didn't charge me any thing. He said it's a lot better than the 1266 and if I didn't like it he would make it right, some how.

I thought Tesoro's were made in Mexico( it's a Arkie thing ). It didn't have a display on it and I was about to ship it back.

When I stopped being mad, I decided to give the Cibola a try. The first thing I noticed was that the factory installed battery had a full charge on it. It was not used at all that I could see. It was appearantly brand new.

With in an hour or two I new that I liked it and wasn't going to miss my display or my 1266.

The rest is history and all I own now is Tesoro. Not that I don't want a fisher but not a 1266.

The only brands I've owned are the original Technatics from 24 years ago and Bounty Hunter and Garratt. I've used a few other brands but didn't own them.

I can't compare many other brands. Sorry:please:

HH

I bought two 1266's when they first came out, 1991 I believe, and kept one of them around for over 10 years. They go deep in ground as mild as we have here, so does the 1270, but they don't work worth a darn in trash. The low frequency, 4.8 khz, was good for deep silver coins, but regardless of where the discrimination was set on the ones I had they usually gave good signals on everything deeper than about 7 inches. The 1266's were also very noisy, even when a target was discriminated out it would give a crackle or pop sound. I've had quite a few Fisher's since I bought those 1266's, 9 if I remember right, and the best Fisher I've seen for hunting in trash was the 1236-X2 and it wasn't as good as the Compadre.

O.K. first I'm sorry that I laughed at the beginning of your post when you mentioned leaving most of your finds on the trunk lid and driving off. But even you have to admit that it does sound funny.
As for your finds, well again you made some really neat recoveries! You seem to have that Compadre really singing. Is the five dollar Mexican coin worth five dollars US? Are you hunting in low discrimination or all metal?

Ha Pap,

It is funny. My memory is so bad if it ain't funny Then I'd be depressed. I'm not so it's funny to me:blink:

I don't think a modern Mexican $5 coin is worth anything. It's not silver. But it was unexpected. Couldn't figure out what come up.

The Compadre doesn't have all metal. I turn the discriminator down as far as I can. Any farther and it turns off. Just one knob, no switches or buttons. Just a little bump on a stick with one knob. Talk about freedom from bells and whistles:detecting:

It's my go to detector now except for relic and artifact hunting in un-cluttered areas. In un-cluttered areas I use a machine with all metal and MGB.That's where I can use the extra depth and/or coil coverage. I like tot lots a lot and the limited depth of the Compadre can actually be an asset. Don't need all metal. The Compadre tells me the depth better that a TID. Pin points dead-on. I can ID better than any machine I've used. It talks to Tabdog. Kind of like Lassie could talk to certain people. Well, little Compadre can talk to me like that. Most people didn't think Lassie could talk to people. They don't think Compadre can talk either. You just have to listen real close.

HH,

I found the $1000 Mexican coin in the photo at the old football field here in town a few years ago. It's about the same size as a half dollar, wish it really was worth a thousand dollars:(.

Well it looks impressive, I'll bet you did a bouble take when you found it. lol

HH,

Your coin is a 1000 pesos coin from Mexico. The $-sign stands here for pesos and not for dollars.
This coin was minted from 1988 to 1992, when the Mexican currency was reformed: 1000 old pesos (or the amount of your coin) made 1 new peso in 1992.
Your coin is minted in aluminum-bronze and mintage for 1988 is 229,300,000

On the obverse you see the national seal of Mexico with the eagle and the snake on a cactus and the countryname: "Estados Unidos Mexicanos", meaning United States of Mexico.
On the reverse you see the image of Juana de Asbaje, the denomination ($1000) and the mintmark of Mexico City: Mo

My Standard Catalog of World Coins gives as catalog value: very fine:0.85 US$/extremely fine:1.25 US$/uncirculated:3.45 US$ and brilliant uncirculated: 4.25 US$

years ago and I mean years ago I found a Mexican coin that was gold colored and thought for just an instant it WAS a gold coin! Oh the agony of the realization! I still have it though and have to smile whenever I pick it up!

If I would have dug that coin, I would have been sure thinking I had a coin worth more than a thousand dollars. Silly yes, but it sure would have had my heart beating fast.

Thanks for the info Willie. I looked it up right after I found it so I knew what it was, but some of the other guys probably didn't. Kind of an impressive coin though, even if it isn't worth anything:).

I think it is an awsome coin, I hope I find one like it some day. :detecting:
