Last night I was next door talking with the neighbor metal detector in hand and ran it around the base of an old palm tree at the edge of the lot. The Compadre hit hard on something. The base of the tree was a solid root tangle, a bullet would have bounced off that stuff. Today I attacked the spot with an AH Leonard Deluxe Soil Knife. That's the one with the razor sharp knife style serrations going almost at the way to the tip on one side. Even with that it took time to cut away the sand and tangles inch by inch. I saw a glint of gold and nearly had heart failure. Surrounded by shards of glass were 22 tokens likely a child's stash from the 1920s or 30s when a building on the property was a small school. The growing palm broke the container years ago and totally entwined the tokens through the holes in their centers. Each one had to be cut away. They were spread over a 8 inch area down about 6 inches total. What really helped pick through the mess as I got them out one by one was the Garrett Pro Pointer. A cool find but it would have be a lot more fun if those were 22 gold pieces.
