Compadre ,defeated by 8year old

Decided to take my lil compadre for a swing yesterday at my grandmothers neighbors yeard , This yard I have been eye balling for some time now as it use to be an old church picnic area in the 40's So I figured ok. Nows the time to ask. yep sure enough , I got permission. Now the fun part of this hunt was the 8year old grand daughter that came running every time I bent down to remove a target. @3 cents. She would grab it out of the hole and run inside. I didnt mind that part. However the part I did mind was when I uncovered a small pocket nife with mother of pearl handles. As soon as I lifted the plug there sshe was, Into the hole quick as a snake strike and off she ran with the pocket knife.

Now granted The grandmother is a fiesty old bird so I didnt argue my find . I was mostly hunting for silver and I believe if it was Silver I would have found. I would have had to say. Hey Little girl. Look over there and run with my find. hahahaha

Kids. Gotta Love Em.

Me thinks Grandmother and Granddaughter were working in cahoots against you! At least you got to do some hunting in the yard.

I've had young kids "help" me uninvited in the local park. I don't mind that so much, but you really have to watch it as some of them will quickly reach into your hole before you're through digging and it wouldn't do to stab one with your digger. Although I guess it would cure them of that habit rather quickly, lol.

Hi Bill, my first thought when I read of the child" reach & grab", reminded me of when I learned early on how sharp some of the broken glass can be in those fresh dug holes.I cut a finger near to the bone early on and learned the hard way about wearing gloves and being extremely careful of not just glass, but all manner of sharp pointy objects just waiting for some soft flesh to lascerate.A child's little fingers could really suffer some serious damage, and halt a hunt in a hurry.. A stern but loving explanation to the child should help prevent a child plundering into the hole or the hand, and I would think the Grandmother would understand the reason for the warning.HH, Charlie

Whew, I thought you we're gonna say an eight year old broke your Compadre ! You should have tied a rope around her waist and the other end around your ankle. That way she couldn't run too far !

When she went to grab the item in the hole I would have grabbed her by the wrist and said "don't do that. I may have found an old razor blade and you may cut your hand". Once she was away from the hole tell her that you are doing the digging and you should be doing the reteiving.
