Compadre Coil Questions

As I understand the time line of the Compadre.... it was introduced about 2001?

Now I read here and there of the 5.75 inch coil... and the 8 inch coil which are currently offered with the Compadre as separate units due to the inability of the Compadre to change coils.

Somewhere in this forum I read about a person that used a "connector" to switch coils on the Compadre... but I may have misread and now can't locate said post. Has there been a Compadre during this 12 year run that allowed coils to be switched? I think not, but thought I would ask.

I also wonder why Tesoro makes the Compadre in such manner....is it because of the 180ED? What would be the reason to hard wire the coils? I understand the H2o models have had issues with vendors on connector issues and those units have hardwired coils... but the Compadre?

Just trying to get a better picture here. Thanks.

Just how they do things over there.
When they first came out they had a solid 7" coil hardwired and eventually changed to the 5.75" coil and just recently added that 8" donut coil.
I have the 7" coil and I love it.
As cheap as they sell this adding those few different pieces to the head unit and coil wire end would cost a bit more to do.
Not a ton more but more.
Also, coming from a guy that was in retail for about 30 years this is also a marketing thing.
If the Compadre could switch coils there would be little reason for many to upgrade to the Silver that can switch coils, (and has that extra knob), or higher into the Tesoro line.

Most companies do this.
Car companies make their low end entry cars cheaper than their up line counterparts so people will move up the line as they upgrade.
If the bottom line cars rode and performed like their higher end brothers and had the same comfort choices and accessory options, how many would upgrade into the top end?

Most other product lines do things this way, too

In sales it's all about features and benefits...the higher you go the more you spend but you should get more features, (and benefits), and high value levels should stay comparable all along the line.

The big deal here is that Compadre actually seems to be more sensitive and can do a few things better than most of the rest of the Tesoro line.
Because it does, we owners deal with that hardwired coil thing.

If you did want to mod a Compadre to use other coils it is not all that hard and plenty have done it although you will definitely wipe out your warranty and Tesoro would probably never want to even look at this modded unit if you had problems.
With the price on these things and the addition of that 8" coil unit to the line, $300 gets you 2 and with those 2 coils I would think you can cover and efficiently hunt just about any site and situation you come across if you just prefer hunting with the Compadre model;.

I see said the blind man. Makes sense. Thanks!

I personally have no problem searching with the 5.75" coil, it just makes me slow my hunt a bit(not a bad thing) when gridding, otherwise it hits so many targets it keeps the fun alive regardless. I use my Silver with 8" if I ever get tired of swinging the smaller coil. I sold a 7" last year that I regret only for the variety. Currently Im looking to trade someone a brand new with warranty card 5.75 for a 8" version for that variety factor. So if anyone reading is interested, hit me up. :)

Revier hit it right on, I think. The Compadre is/was designed to be an entry level,. simple uncomplicated, easy to use detector that could be sold at a bargain price. Turned out to be more capable than that description would indicate and has inspired almost a cult following. Yes, I have one too. The 7" model.

I have 2 compadres one with 5.75 that I waterproofed and one with a 7" that I got about 1 month ago. I really like them both. I accually prefer them over my outlaw for most situations. The 5.75 coil is a great coil, very sensitive. I think the reason that most people love the Compadres is the small coil. Changing coils changes the way a detector sounds and performs. The compadre does so well on gold because it has a small coil and you are forced to use it. I added a connector to mine and then took it off. I found that the Compadre was setup correctly as it was. Now I have converted it to a waterproof machine. I shall reserve judgment on that conversion untill I have had more test time.

If not damaged they are, at least for shallow wading. Just don't turn them up and let water drip into the eletronics, nor drop the box in the water of course.
