I assume coinshooting not jewelry hunting is what you mean...and American coins.
For all coins, nickel and up, the knob a little before the 5 cent mark.
Nickels are weird for me and out of all the coins can act the most iffy and may come in above and below that 5

Take a silver coin, a CA clad quarter/dime, Loonie and Toonie and a gold ring. Pull tab or two.
See where they disc out, then set your disc accordingly.
If going for Loons and Toons except for the newest ones, you can crank disc up to zinc or so
Large gold drops out around pulltab, small gold drops out around foil.

Mark your disc dial for future reference. As each detector maybe a bit different to be precise.

Get this ... our new "paper " money is plastic !

Thanks Sven

Take some of your money and lay it on the ground. Also put down a few nails and pull tabs. Disc out what you don't want. See where the coins you want come in at on your disc.
Now set it their and find coins. Some times I will do that if I am in a trashy area. Just look for some coins. Maybe another time I will go back when I feel like digging every thing and hunt that way.
You can cherry pick if you want to. I don't care. Just have fun... KEN
