i took my compadre out last night to hunt in the park and after about an hour,it started to crackle, but stopped every time it hit a target.but once i moved it away from the target,it would start crackling again.changed the battery, twice.five or so minutes,it worked fine. not a loud crackle,a soft annoying crackle.undoing the earphones made no difference.i thought of electrical interference but i have hunted in this park before with my silver sabre with no problems, both operate on 12khz.so whats the cure anybody? see ya! blowfly

Hello

Sounds like EMI (Electro magnetic interferences);

The Silver is 10 Khz, and the Compadre 12. So they're different .

Just check the Compadre somewhere else, to see if it still crackles.

i have the original silver sabre,1983 model and it operates at 12khz,not like the newer models that operate at 10khz.i don't normally use the compadre.it hangs in a cupboard,it was a waste of money buying it.but once again i listened to other peoples advice.why buy a small coil for my vaquero, when just for a little more you can buy an other detector already fitted with a small coil that's a killer in trashy areas and tot lots.this happened once before and i was told by a dealer that the disc wasn't high enough, yeah??so i didn't use it again til the other night in a crowded park, not wanting to be in everyones face so to speak. it seems to me that these tesoro's that are sold outside of the states break down faster.my vaquero 18 months old has been returned for repairs.and now the compadre is playing up.it's hardly been used.in australia we have only a one year dealer warranty on them.i'm hoping tesoro looks kindly at me and fixes the vaquero for free,i really miss it. blowfly

Try this. Turn it on all metal and move the cord back and forth where it goes into the coil. Then do the same where it enters the box. Sounds like a loose wire on one end.

After some correspondence initiated on the modifications forum, I turned the sensitivity up on my Compadre until it starts to crackle. Yes it does quiet over a target and reports the target very well and clearly. Over the open areas it returns to crackling; sometimes not very quietly. Turning the sensitivity to that point increased air test results I think about 1.5 inches (I'd have to go back and find my original notes to be sure).

Things that may make the crackling drift or act differently, besides being on the high edge of sensitivity ... change in ground mineralization, temperature differences, interference, connections, circuit drift ... some of those it sounds like you've investigated.

Have you used the Compadre at that park before?
Cheers,

hi tvr,my understanding of what you are saying,is that the more you turn up the discrimination, the more you are likely to experiance, crackling.i was operating mine between foil and 5c.yes i did use it in that park once before.are these compadres so sensitive that they will pick up any electronic interference in the field of operation?and yes it did play up now that i think about it.i've been over this same area with my silver sabre and vaquero when it was still working and neither of these machines gave so much of a whimper out of place. see ya ! blowfly.

Actually, as the discrimination gets turned up it gets a little quieter.

I tweaked an internal potentiometer to turn up the sensitivity to get it to crackle some when it is just sitting on a cardboard box outside not looking at a target.

I can not air test the Compadre in the house because it just kind of talks all the time when it is inside. I need to take it outside away from the lights and electronics. Most of my other detectors I can do a quick check inside the house, but not the Compadre.

Over most ground, the Compadre is a very good performer. Did not take very long to pay for itself.

 yep the poor man pays twice , I did the exact thing :nopity: ........awesome lil detector all the same

hi ya baz,ows it goin, awright.yeah the little devil chatters at night in the park where all the lights are on and it does tend to play up with the ground up here, but it stll comes on strong over a target.funny i seem to be finding more with it and the silver sabre while the vaquero is taking a holiday in the land of the free, that is if you are american.you still trying to flog your silver u max.i saw a couple on e bay just recently and i wondered if one was yours.i'm going to take on the cairns show grounds with it to-morrow,because all the minelab boys will be in attendance and it tends to get up their noses that i'm finding stuff with compadre that they missed.bye for now! blowfly

g'day Blowfly yeah alls good , gee's ya ontha ball ....yes I sold my Silver on ebay recently got $310 seen another listed for 450 then down to $425 with 4" coil + cleansweep listed for a couple a weeks didnt sell no interest out there
goodluck at the showgrounds you and the Compadre should cleanup , least you'll be flippin targets off the end of ya digger not diggin minelab bomb craters  no offence intended toward minelab or minelab users

The 'issues' stem from not having he ability to change search coils to see if it is a coil related problem, and from not being able to adjust the sensitivity or ground balance. I have owned a number of Compadre's through the years, both with the 7" and 5

thanks monte, tvr also said what to try from a previous instruction given by you to him.as always your infomation is much appreciated, thank you. bye for now, blowfly
