Coming from Tesoro’s- looking at Pirate and Deeptech

Hey everyone, first post here. Migrated here after not getting much info elsewhere. I’m a Tesoro user for all my hunting. I use a vaquero for relics and I use an Eldorado umax for yards. I have many farm sites from mid 1800s that I frequent. Iron infested and even modern trash in a lot of it. So far my Tesoro’s serve me well, but I’ve been looking at the deep techs and pirates. How do they stack up in the Midwest? They have the features I want. My ground is Mostly mild. The vids are very impressive on these units.

You won't find many Pirate owners in the US, think there were a couple. The Pirate rate right up there with the Tesoros, they just suffer some EMI. They are similar to the Golden Mask detectors and bet the circuitry is almost identical. The only big issue is most overseas detectors do not have Disc settings past small foil.

The DeepTechs have a bigger following here and overseas. They love to hunt in iron infested areas. Again, disc does not go beyond small foil. Visit the DeepTech subforum https://www.findmall.com/list.php?89 Make a posting there. Once someone has tried a DeepTech, they find overall its a big step up from Tesoros. Like Tesoros they have different models with different features.

I will be looking for something truly better than the Tesoro’s so deeptech suits that. My best sites are the toughest sites. Rough terrain, brushy, or open field/cattle pasture. In the timber targets remain shallower but in the pasture I NEED the depth. It’s been a series of frustrating hunts lately in the cold fighting with iron. I’ve been digging good relics and larger non ferrous targets, but the buttons and coins elude me. I have a 4” coil coming for the Eldorado tomorrow. My last attempt at the best separation my machines can offer.

Why not go with a Tejon and 12x10 coil.......deep and still good in iron......just don't try to overpower it with high sensitivity settings,a deeptech won't give you any more finds than this set up in real terms.Useful twin disc feature too.

Using Tesoros for so long like many of us, eventually many like to look at, buy and try other brands. No harm in that. There may be other brands and models that may suit hunting situations much better...........................You don't have to be locked into a Tesoro for life. Especially since Tesoro may not be around shortly.

Side note, I had two Tejons over the years and two DeepTech Vista Golds. I prefer the Gold over the Tejon. The new Vista Gold Gain according to other seasoned DT users is a nice step up from the Gold. I'm looking at another DeepTech for 2019 as a beep and dig machine.

I was only suggesting the Tejon as an alternative to his previous machines if he was interested in sticking with Tesoro. He suggested he wanted something "truly better than the Tesoro's".......well the truth is he won't find anymore with a deeptech than he would with a Tejon that is set up correctly to prevailing conditions.
Most of us are not brand loyal but most of us,including myself get tempted by other machines because we see them performing miracles on you tube vids.I've learned through over thirty years experience that a lot of what you see on these videos is pure rubbish and the testers are biased yowards their "favourite" machines.
The Tejon is a big step up from the tesoro's he is using now, especially on depth with the 12x10 coil fitted and thats why i suggested it.....thats all.How may targets do you think the deeptech would find over the Tejon in real world conditions.....i was just suggesting that Tesoro can still be relevant to him if he wants it to be.

I agree with you if some one wants to stick with a Tesoro, Tejon would be the way to go. In his milder soil it maybe just perfect as it is one of the best in iron trash.
Where I live the soil has black magnetic sand mixed in where the DeepTech Gold does much better.

DeepTech have a couple of coils in 8" and 5" sizes that are round coils with bottom solid designs which are good for the brushy areas.
Check them out to see if they suit your hunt conditions.
Cheers,
Drew.

Definitely look at Deeptech. I've been a Tesoro user for many years. A Tejon for the last 5. I'm in the US and mainly hunt iron infested sites. But I field hunt a lot also. I bought the Vista Smart Plus 2 years ago. It's a beast all the way around. The recovery speed is that of a Deus. It smokes the Tejon in that area. I also believe it deeper than the Tejon by far. I still use my Tejon when I need a little discrimination. The Deeptech will only disc out foil and does a crappy job at it when cranked to the max. However it will find the tiniest piece of foil at 6 inches. Also the control panel is big,the factory shaft is flimsy feeling even when everything is tight. They have come out with a new carbon fiber cam lock upper stem that corrects the problem. I haven't got one yet. The two tone is just incredible in iron. I have the 5" DD and the Super six DD I use in the heavy stuff. Sounds like your style of hunting would be perfect for the Super six. Good luck with whatever you choose. I highly recommend the Deeptech. Richard at Backwoods Detectors is the man you need to talk to. He's in Tennessee.

Thanks for the info, Hanoverdigging. I'm quite impressed with my Tejon's recovery speed -- at least compared to other brands I've used -- so it's really interesting to hear that the Vista Smart Plus is even better.

Now, if DeepTech would only come out with a model with expanded discrimination range and a few concentric coils...

In heavy iron the recovery speed is far superior to my Tejon. I have a colonial site behind my house and I've probably spent over 100 hours with the Tejon and the 5.75 concentric. That set up in heavy iron is one of the best you will ever find. That being said, I go to my Colonial site as soon as I got the Deeptech. Well the first hunt I pulled out a pocket full of relics that the Tejon missed. I was blown away. So in heavy iron it is better than the Tejon. The two tone is wicked in iron. My Tejon never leaves my truck as it comes out when I need to discriminate foil. I have a video on YouTube.. Deeptech Vista Smart Plus recovery speed is the name of the video. Taken at my shooting range with a 10 year bed of brass casings. Check it out. And I agree a concentric coil for the Deeptech would be dangerous.

Man I want one so bad. Forcing myself to wait and see what they do in 2019!

Me too :) That something could be more lethal than the Tejon with a 5.75" coil is impressive indeed. My Tejon has found stuff that my CTX-3030 with a 6" coil missed. I'm really wondering now what more goodies a DeepTech could unearth.

Definitely going to watch Hanoverdigging's video.

I have told everyone for a few years now to try a DeepTech if you loved Tesoros and want a step up from where Tesoro left off.
You would pleasantly be surprised at what they can do. This maybe the year many try a DT rather than investing in a new Tesoro.

Yes I agree. I will be branching out this year. So far, DT is on top. Researching the mikron nrg 150 and keeping an eye on pirate detectors as well. The mikron appears to have a full disc range...

I also have been a Minelab guy hunting with SE-PRO for about Ten years. I worked the Colonial site behind my house with the SEF 6x8 and the Sunray X-5. Then I got the Tejon and went in with the 5'75 and my jaw dropped with what I found with it. At that point I thought the Tejon was king! I want to be in heaviest iron I can get in. The speed and the two tone are incredible. I'll probably end up with the Gold Gain as it runs at 30k vs the Smart Plus at 14k. I think the Gold Gain would be a little better in iron. Something you guys on the fence about getting one. Pending your style of hunting. These machines are designed to hunt over a 3000 year old bed of Roman nails.

I like so many aspects about this post.
