Is Combined best used with a Open screen as in no Disc, Is it true the less Disc you use the Deeper the CTX can find targets????
Thanks , Mickfin

I have not had any trouble at all finding deep targets to 12" using ALOT of Discrimination. That's the great thing about the CTX, it's technology has surpassed other's, where their depth would be limited by using discrimination.

In my Combined mode, I have pattern one set up with an open screen (only line 35 fe is disc out)...In pattern two, I run quite a bit of disc, and it is very easy to switch back and forth, to suit the site.

I RUN MINE THE SAME AS JAMESM COMBINED FERROUS COIN, RECOVERY DEEP, RECOVERY FAST SOMETIMES I KEEP ONE PATTERN DISC, AND ONE WIDE OPEN TO CHECK TARGETS AND SUCH.... SIMILAR TO QUICKMASK ON THE ETRAC... HH

I'm with JamesM and Bav - I run an open screen most of the time because I like to hear how the high tones are interplaying with the iron grunts - it's easier for me to tell if it's a false or not - that being said - I also run a discrim pattern sometimes if the falsing isn't too bad to give my brain a break.

What Mikfin is asking, does using Discrimination effect depth with the CTX? I say no it doesn't. What do you other guys think?

The CTX is an exception to the general rule that applies to most other detectors with discrimination Micky. Since the CTX does not have an All Metal search mode, you are always in Discrimination search mode whether you have an open screen or not. It might help coming from the V3i to look at the CTX discrimination as audio discrimination instead of target discrimination. I think you essentially have 1,750 audio notch filters that can be turned on or off, you are not actually discriminating the target out, you still get the TDI, just not the audio response for the rejected segments. That is why you can have as much audio discrimination as you want with very little or no change to the depth. Many of us like to listen to what is in the ground besides the targets and that is why I prefer to have a pretty much "open" screen, but that is a user option.

you can crank the sens up on the ctx and still get the same depth at least with my experiences with it. I ID a Dime at 8-9" in open and switched to my disc pattern and it still hit it loud and clear.. That is one great thing I noticed on the ctx right away even with massive disc pattern you can still hit deep targets pretty accurate.

Yes GateKeeper That's what I ment , And thanks 4R all the Replys, Mickfin,

I have notice in heavy trash and iron if I use a lot of disc as coin program 1 the detector has a hard time keeping up screen wise and sound wise the signals are not full and can be missed coming from a low to a high good signal I use open screen and listen to it all the sounds and #s are longer and not as chopped.Just what I observed as for using long for sound can't get use to it.sube

I don't think it effects it in the least myself just my opinion though!!!:cheekkiss:

I haven't decided with this machine yet, but I do work with an open screen most of the time at the beach. My first Excal I used to work in all metal most of the time and I loved those almost unheard murmurs of a deep target. Then when I switched over ro discrimination, and there was no signal, I was sure there was deep gold down there. Those signals for sure I would of missed if I was just discriminating. The CTX is different than any machine I have ever used and except for the stock settings, I have been doing quite a bit of fiddling. This is the sixth Minelab I have owned and will probably be the best. Just rambling here.

The CTX has a much harder time hearing those deeper coins with discrimination in very trashy areas. I did a side-by-side comparison with open screen and the regular coin pattern. I was amazed how clearer the targets were in open screen. I also like to hear the iron grunts and not have the CTX go silent over iron

i agree with jimzilla if you use a pattern if there is iron next to a good target it will null out and because of the recovery time you will miss the good targets, here in the uk we have a lot of roman sites which have a lot of iron, were you could miss a lot of good stuff, open screen all the way no nulling out

Basically, a weak conductor will not audio respond in conjunction with iron under the coil, if disc is used. You may NOT get the low conductor with zero disc either (try various sweep angles to improve your chances), but adding even a little disc is death to low conductors. What is a low conductor? Thin white gold rings, small yellow gold rings, chains/jewelry with little mass ... in other words a whole lot of valuable targets.

The machine will run quieter ... but you pay for it.

I used the stock silver program in ferrous coin combined for the first 4 months with great success, however I started running open screen for the past 3 weeks and really like it 95% of the time for the simple fact that I hear everything, and have picked up some nice finds that were right next to Iron, in the silver program I may have ignored the short chirp the silver program gave...
