colonial house remains hunting

I received permission to hunt a property with the remains of the stone house. Parts of the stone walls are still standing and the area is loaded with trash, I believe the house just collapsed upon itself. In the field next to the house I recovered a 1839 large cent and lead childrens toy. The house is in a wooded area with a stream maybe 50 yards away.Tried hunting in the wooded area and house area but so much trash tried running the MXT at normal settings . So I am wondering if there is a strategy for hunting these areas any help or advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ezra.

Using a small coil if you have would might help some

Sounds like you could spend a whole summer there. Pick a potential spot and start pulling trash until there is nothing left but possible keepers.

See if you can find the old well and the out house. Hunt around those areas. Also check by the stream. Clothing that was washed hung outside between trees. How many times have you found coins in the washing machine and dryer. If theirs a foundation to a barn check the launch into it. I have found coins there also.Rock walls were good hiding places.Inner cellar walls of the main house also are good hiding place. Any old pine trees near the house are good hunting places. Good luck keep us posted.

Hi ezra, outhouse, clothesline(fenceline also) stream, barn etc, are all good places to search but you said "the stone walls are still standing", so that tells you right off that if there are any goodies to be found, those stone walls have them fenced in for you. Concentrate on that area first and foremost, as it may be loaded with nails or whatever, but is likely also hopefully "Not" to have a huge amount of modern trash. If the house had wood floors, kids loved to stuff coins and whatever into them. I have found coins under old moved (torn down) houses that were literally stacked on top of onenother, so the only likely cover on the coins will be what has fallen in over the years and hopefully no one dumped trash within the stone walls. If it had a dirt floor, better yet!! That is where the folks spent a great deal of their time. It is a concentrated living area and "some" of whatever they lost is still within those walls. Smaller the coil the better for getting between the iron (masking) and better yet if you can come up on an old 100 kHz Compass (or other) that ignores small iron altogether, but picks up the goodies. Or another good one in the iron is the little Compadre, if you dont have any luck with the MXT. Great opportunity you have there and the goods are there for sure. HH, Charlie

There is no easy way. First, figure out where your best hunting areas are at the site. Suggestions for these areas have already been posted.

Next, prioritize your areas.

Third, lay out a grid on the most promising area. Then, put your 9.5 coil back on, go out and, using the grid, clear that most promising area of junk. That is the part that leaves me holding my head in my hands. It's a royal pain, but it has to be done

Fourth, put on the coil of your choice and finish pulling the rest of the good stuff. Yea.

Fifth, repeat on remaining areas.

HH

Thank you everyone for your responses and advice, Sunday afternoon I managed to get some detecting in so I took my F75SE and I am the learning process for this machine . Anyway I decided took get away from the house because of the trash and crossed a small stream and try to hunt this field in back of where the home was. I started digging old pewter buttons and other things and thought there should be some coins ,anyway I dug a 1797 large cent and a no date half cent. Thanks for the help Ezra,
