Colonial era lead button? Help me ID this

I live in a town that was official settled in 1778.
I found this tonight, near the historic heart of the city.
It was about 7 inches down.

Is it a button? Any sources with photos of similar items. I googled with no luck

Are you sure it's not a carved piece of lead. Take you picture to the relic forum and see the if
guys suggest it to be a bullet carved by a soldier just a guess!
 
Broadestpower, thanks for the tip.

1. it doesn;t seem to be carved due to pitting in the back of the large part of it which is more consistent with casting. But I could be wrong.

2. I think the The finial concept is plausable. Will post in the relic forum.
