Colonial Digs...finally a good button

Detected a good colonial site the last two Mondays and got a few interesting buttons (finally). I've been striking out with just a lot of junk being dug, but yesterday finally dug a Rev War military button...a British 10th Regiment coat. A few other decent colonial period relics including a couple very nice watch keys ( I don't know how these delicate things survived!)The 10 button is in pretty rough shape around the edges and the device is a little weak , but hey I'll take what I can get these days. HH..Paul

Those are sure nice! Congards <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

Still looking for my first colonial era regimental button.

Love that colonial stuff!! Last one to find a Rev War belt plate is a rotten egg! Keep those colonial pit relics coming Bill, I really enjoy seeing that stuff. HH

great finds there. I found a button this summer in a Cavalry camp that i hunted this summer.could this be a rev. war coat button? I put it in the unid box till i saw your post.

I don't think so. Most Rev War period numbered buttons, colonial or British have arabic style numerals either incised or (as in your button) raised. I'm pretty sure it's not a British button as the British 18th was the Royal Irish and they had a button with "R I" above an arabic 18 (during the Rev War period).Yours may be a field replacement from a later period US regiment, but the back of the button could tell more.

This is a pic of the back, i know it's not much help. the only button in this site that i have found like that.everything else was CW period or newer.Oh yeah i did find a 1776 spanish 1 reale there also.

remnants of a cast integral shank. Probably not British (unless it is a field cast replacement)Most British buttons have a "boss" with a iron loop shank...which is usually missing or corroded away. Here is a pic of the backs of two other issue "10" buttons I found some years ago. The next pic is the back of a USA button I found which has the "cast integral shank".
