College/University Campus Grounds...?

BARGuy

New member
Would anyone care to share their experiences, good or bad, with coinshooting on campus? How tough was it to get permission & from whom? Impossible?

I'm gonna be spending some time about 5 miles from a relatively small college this summer...

Thanx Folks,
DR

In Madison Wi they don't allow it

Some will allow and some will not. I go to the main office and ask, usually end up talking to the President of the college or university. Results will vary and some seem to be on the fence so your skills in asking may come into play, if you have hunted other colleges, you can use them as a reference. The colleges I have hunted were good hunting grounds especially the older ones going back to the mid 1800's. Good luck.

Man! try to get there when school is out for some reason, I hunt the snow piles and their melt zones with good results, also, theres always some sort of "party" place like the quadrangle between the dorms, where the kids throw frisbees or kick a soccer ball around that are good...I met with the campus security and they said, "dont dig no holes, and stay away from the buildings" just on the outskirts of campuses there are a lot of good places too..the nearest playground, or trails to and from the liquor stores...the "secret" party place, smoking spot, swimming hole, sledding hill is what you need to find, if you can get a kid to tell you where it is. You can sort of "see" the spots from the satellite even with just mapquest...if you post a "lost items found" on one of the kiosks, at least you have a reason to be there regarding the security issue, leave a copy with the security, and offer to help them when they get a call, get their contact info too, and let them know you are coming to search for something lost..dress and act nice, dont smoke, and leave anything that looks like a weapon in the car...even a trowel..just take a screwdriver, but keep even that hidden, pick up all the garbage you deem proper...if you get to know the groundskeepers, and help them find their sprinkler heads, you are freaking golden! ....Man! the ultimate would be allowed access to the football field stadium area! Just imagine all that jewelry lost by those tumbling cheerleaders, and the clad under the bleachers! Happy Hunting!

Thirty years ago a chap really cleaned up at Penn State University in Center County, Pennsylvania using an old Garrett gooseneck. He hunted all over campus and never seemed to get run off so I guess then it was ok. Now I have no way to know. I would suspect times changed. However it does not cost anything to ask.

Hey...Thanx people. Mudpuppy, you touched on some things that may work in this scenario. It's an OLD smaller private school with what looks to be a bunch of kids partying on daddys $$$. Already found the frisbee/flag football field & one of the outside "hangouts". Think I'll check the groundskeepers first to see if they'll go out on a limb & if not, I'll move on to "management".

If it's a public college, then I just go. Naturally, like any place, at off-hours, using due discretion. I would treat a public college no different than a public beach, or school, or park, etc.... But if it's a private college, then technically, you would need permission.

When I was a kid, growing up, and got my first detector in the 1970s, we lived near a parochial elementary school, that had simply been the "neighborhood hangout", ever since I'd been old enough to walk. Ie.: the neighborhood kids used the swings and monkey bars after hours, and anyone who wanted could jog the track, etc..... Maybe those were "simpler times", but when I got my first detector, it was just a natural to go try it out there. It wasn't locked or anything, and it never occured to me that there was anything wrong. No one ever cared or said anything. But as I say, maybe this was simpler times, and technically, ......... Or think of it this way: So too is a shopping center "private property". But you are ok to walk there, "until told otherwise" (ie.: 'Permission to pass revokable by owner").

ask the president of the college before hunting. IMHO it's always best for the hobby to ask first if you don't know.
Just my thoughts.

local college in Macon Ga had a prof. go balistic when he saw people th'ing. Campus police did not care, one was a th'er. put a stop to it all. Acres of old buildings and ball fields torn up and down, and now whole new part of campus built. ton of goodies lost. Did try some dirt hauled off to a vacant lot in ghetto crack side of town. This college was high on the party list nationally at one time, could have mined aluminum! TABS< TABS< TABS! this prof was said to be local lib extremist that history does not need to be disturbed type. whack job. imagine the class rings that could have been returned! cant fix stupid. if his line of thinking comes with a college degree, well.... i'll just stay un-edjemacaded! LOL!

Yeah, what you said Dixie! I'm seriously shopping for a good underwater unit, and a hookah...seems that only very early mornings can a guy sweep the public parts of land without getting either hassled, or questioned..
