Cold?

I went hunting this past Sunday. Went to an old school built in 1906(they just dug up the ground around it)and was looking forward to finding many great finds. Got there around 700am and what happen was the explorer xs just could'nt calm down! I was so upset I almost threw it across the yard! it was chirping like crazy and the cross hairs went everywhere, even when I raised the coil high in the air. I switched from my ML 8" coil to the standard coil (no change). It was in the 40-50's range. Anyway, after it starting to warm up, the machine started to operate fine. This happened to me once before, when it was much colder. But, the last time I went out was much colder than Sunday and the explorer worked perfectly then. So I am confused, is something wrong with my machine or am I doing something wrong? I did find some cool school bus tokens and a coin that is so currioded that I cant see anything (its socking in olive oil now). Help!

Ive hunted at 20 degrees with no problem.. yours sound more like outside interference.. did you try a noise cancel? was it wet out that day?

Kenk, the last few days I was out for 2001 in the cold my detector wouldn't stop high tone falsing. The display was fine but the noise drove me crazy. Wish I would of restarted it to see if that was the problem. What you describe did happen to me though and restarting did the trick.Actually I found an 8 reale 20 minutes later. Never will forget that day.
ps Does it sound like coin hits every swing?

I must have used the noise canx botton a 1000 times. no effect.

I restarted it (what I remember) 3 times. It sounded more like chirping, really low key, not as loud as it should have been with what my headphone were adjusted at.

I'm wondering if battery voltage could be a problem. The batteries output may be low until they warm up. By using the batteries, a small amount of heat is generated. I crashed a nice Remote Control airplane on time cause the battery pack was too cold, howeveer these were Ni-cad, not nmH. I'd lick a respone from some of our more "seasoned" hunters if they would ablige
Thanx steve

Right now, I am having David at dixie helping me. What you said makes sense, but it would be a more common type of problem than just me. Unless there are more prople out there with the same problem and arent coming forward. Take care and good hunts
