[size=large]Of course cold depends on where you are. If it gets down to the 50's in southern cal. the citizens think the new ice age has arrived. get to -40 in alaska they wonder if winter will ever get there.
you got a great idea for bringing in the new year. i will join you, in spirit. that is to say i will try to get out that day also. i also am a newbie ( 7 months now ) so will have to see how i fair in the winter months. quess one could spend the time researching new ideas on where to hunt next and make plans for spring.

[size=small]I used to hunt in winter
Keyword: used.
Now that I am retired I do not have to make my detecting time count.
If conditions are not right today,
perhaps they will be tomorrow or
the next day or
the day after that.
I remember going out and freezing my tookus off, bending the holy heck out of trowels
while chipping at frozen ground.
My best advice is to dress warm.
Because you are not moving too fast, you will really feel the cold.
I don't know how the cold will affect the GTI feature of your machine.
When I winter hunted I was using a BFO machine and
that was unaffected by the cold.
Keep your feet warm.
Good luck and happy hunting.

Well cant help u on the cold weather tips Ranger, because Im in NW, Florida. But have to give guys up nawth a lot of credit for hunting when u are freezing your tails off . I was thinking of battery operated socks, but would that effect your detector?

We occasionally get some frozen ground around W. Tn. and I then look for tall grass which apparently acts like insolation and then around trees. When I say frozen ground, though, one to two inches deep is usually it. And then, seldom for very long. Good luck. HH jim tn

I'd pledge to join you on Jan 1, but by then we'll have 12-15 inches of frost in the ground. I can't imagine where I would find a place to dig without some dynamite.

You people are making me cold....... over here in Southern California 50 degrees with the sun out is.......... burr.....Cold

I guess I am lucky in a way, We have many days that are in the high 50s, sixties and even seventies here in Oklahoma all winter long. Unless we have a snowstorm one can usually get out a couple of days a week by just putting on a little more clothing. The ground rarely freezes. Onus

Who needs clothes with a jug of brandy? HA. Many years ago my aunt and uncle came back from a world cruise and brought boose from all over the world home with them. I got attached to a jug of 75 year old blackberry brandy and disappeared for about two days blown completely out of my gourd. HAA. It was some wunerful stuff. HA.

Yeah I used to live in sunny California, also Pheonix and Las Vegas, so know what that warm weather is like. And being born and raised in Illinois I know what the opposite extreme is. One time while living in Northern Idaho they had a freak cold front move in and it got down to 55 below. Man was that cold.

Today is the first day that frost was thick enough to be a problem. I found a couple of quarters that I could not dig. Some areas had about two inches of frost this morning mainly where the grass was thin. Had to move to the areas where the grass was thicker and longer. Winter is coming fast. :(
