Cold Two Hour Hunt

RLOH

Well-known member
It was 37 degrees this morning and the wind was blowing 12-15mph so I bundled up to squeeze in two hours of detecting. I only found four coins, but two were silver dimes. The first one has a little drama to it. I got a perfect repeating silver warble that showed somewhat deep on the gauge. When I squatted to dig, I noticed a healed over plug was just about where I pinpointed. When I dug, I found a piece of rusty wire at six inches. I knew this was not the signal I heard so I enlarged the hole at the bottom and found the target two inches deeper, but two inches off to the side. It was a 1933 merc. Someone was real close to that one. Second silver was a roosie from 8-9 inches deep from a spot I have been over many times. It was a perfect signal. This just proves that if you are off 2 or 3 inches, you might as well be off ten feet.

Well done! I have never hit a 9"dime with my SE...Care to share your settings? Thanks! Ted

Ted, I hunt in a wide open screen. Iron mask 22, manual sens 26, fast-deep neutral, gain 8, and variability 10. I barely creep the coil listening for any repeatable chirps. I have found that deep rusty iron will give a high tone from one direction when using a high manual sensitivity. If you do get any repeatable higher tone, pay close attention to the cursor. If it is deep rusty iron, it will most of the time creep over to the blacked out iron. It's not foolproof and I dig more than my share of deep rusty iron, but I do dig many coins over 8 inches deep. This slow hunting is not for everybody and I have to be extremely patient to listen to all the junk.
