CoinStrike, not your average garden variety test!

While sitting here in Kabul, Afghanistan with my new C$ i purchased off ebay, I decided to do a garden variety test...penny, nickel, dime, quarter. First I need to describe the soil here. Lets put it this way, when using my digging tool to recover targets, the neodymium magnet on top gets covered with magnetic pebbles and sand so bad that I have to stop and pull the junk off after every other target. Needless to say the soil here is about as bad as it gets. My test garden location is right next to a very strong EMI source from an underground power line running to our AC unit, so conditions couldn't be much worse. So last night before the rain I made my test garden burying each coin a minimum of 8 inches probably actually closer to 9 or 10. I always hear everyone complaining about how bad the C$ is near EMI, well you may be surprised at my results. As soon as I turned on the C$ I was able to detect the penny with no problem, just lots of extra chatter when off target. The initial settings were -25 threshold, 6 sens, iron disc 99, autotrack on, averaging on. Ground balance procedure, held coil to ground, held in auto gb button for 2 sec, while still holding gb button lifted up 2 inches held two secs then released it. In trying to tame the chatter I lowered the threshold to -55, sens still at 6, iron disc at 99 still, re-ground balanced, this time I took auto track off but left the averaging on. The unit was pretty quiet so now I proceeded to re check the penny and the rest of the coins. The penny still sounded very nice and strong...solid ping in both directions, no problem. The nickel surprised me as it sounded good in both directions however it did some jumping back and forth between high and mid tone numbers fell between 13 and 23 definitely sounded worth digging, I think I found myself a new nickel machine! The dime rang off nicely with minimal jumping and read around 33 or so on the VDI. Of course the quarter had no problems however read a little high as did all the other coins. I believe this was a result of the averaging being on, which I really like. I also must mention that speeding up my sweep helped the targets sound off much cleaner and crisper. Now things get interesting. I brought out my friends 1236x2, turned it on, emi was too strong and overloaded it. It sounded so erratic and crazy! I turned down the sensitivity to 4 and it calmed down but it couldn't pinpoint and would not pick up any of the coins. I turned the sens back up to 8 and with the constant chatter I was able to hear the coins trying to break through but the machine was too unstable to use and I almost had a seizure, needless to say pinpointing was a bust. After this test I would have to say the the C$ is just as deep as my CZ70 and 1270 if not better. It also goes to show you that lowering that threshold down to -55 will still allow you to hear 8+ inch deep coins with no problem...in crappy soil. I was very pleased with my results and I know this unit will be awesome when I get back to the good old USA. Oh and don't worry the area where I did my test has been cleared of all mines :)

Thanks, great test report. This week I used my C$ at a well hunted 1700's cellar hole. The area around the old foundation is really tuff to search because of all the scrap metal in the ground, you just can't dig it all. At the foundation I learned if I lower the Threshold down to about minus 40 the smaller scrap (smaller than a coin) can't be heard and the EMI chatter from nearby power lines went away too. Using the 5" coil I got a repeatable high tone signal near the foundation and dug a 1787 NJ copper then about 30 feet away got a mixed signal and dug a Merc dime and 4 wheaties in the same hole, and 5 or 6 rusty nails came out of that hole too. I read posts in this forum the C$ is really good in mineralized soil when the Threshold is lowered. I'm still learning what this detector can do.

That really makes me miss detecting at home! Great finds! I want to detect here but there are to many UXO's (unexploded ordinance) from the Russians and I don't want to get blown up lol. I can imagine that there are some silver and gold coins somewhere around here as the locals don't have metal detectors and the history here is very long and rich. It's killing me haha! Anyway I love the C$ and hopefully we get some more posts with finds and test results. It really helps others that are having issues with this underestimated machine.
