Coinstrike Issues...

Hey all, I've used a Coinstrike off and on for since they came out and am fairly knowledgeable about it. Recently, I noticed that when I go to pinpoint a target the pinpoint tone is really broken up and choppy on almost every target. Has anyone ever had this happen before? I don't know what to make of it. I also noticed that sometimes a wheat penny will now read at about 26 rather than the usual 29. Every other coin reads as it should though. Thanks for any opinions or info.

The copper penny range is 28-30
So 26 is a bit low!

When mine had the bad coil and when it messed up (which was 94% of the time) ALL US coins read LOW,
Quarter fell into the copper penny range, (close to it)
Copper pennies and clad dimes fell into the lower zinc range,
Nickles fell low in the iron range.

But I don't remember having the pinpoint problem??
But it did act like you where trying to run it inside a microwave oven and it ON!
I lot of chirping and falsing even with LOW sensitivity and threshold settings.

Have you tried a second coil yet?
If not or if you only have the one factory coil then you may try some electronic cleaner on the coil connector pins and see if that helps.

The only real failures I know of with the C$ has been coil related.

Do you have an extra coil to try? (even a small coil)

Or do you have somebody that you could switch coils with (actually trading the control boxes is easier)

It runs really stable and quiet, even at zero threshold and 9 sens. It's just the static sounding pinpoint tone and the lower numbers on wheaties. It's not always lower on the wheats but sometimes it is. I don't have anyone else around who uses a Coinstrike to check a different coil. What really stinks is it's my only detector now and I keep wondering the whole time I detect if something is wrong. It actually still seems to work decent but I'm not sure if I'm missing targets. I noticed that this CS 8" coil is alot heavier than my last one, it almost looks like someone glued a coil cover on it. Thanks for the response Mark. How's that Edge working out?

Well, this whole season I've only been out a couple of hours and an hour and a half of that it was dark! Every time I try to make a plan to hunt, something comes up to keep me from it! I mean its June and two hours is it, that's really bad.
But, the two hours I was out it was with the Edge! which wasn't the greatest plan seeing how it was the maiden voyage with it and it was dark.
But, it worked well and I have had it out in my test gardens several times.
So, far so good, I just need some time to hunt.

Let me ask you this,
I have two C$'s one is new with warranty, the other is an earlier model. What I noticed about them is though they are made the same they do have different battery contact tips in them,
The earlier one the contacts look to be copper colored!
The newer one the contacts are silver, and a LOT stiffer (dang they may be even to stiff)

Now, I'm not sure if the pinpoint tone is any different between the two of mine or not, I don't have both here to test them side by side, the earlier one is out on loan, but I thinking Its coming back pretty soon and I'll be able to compare them then.

Mine has the copper colored contacts. It just started doing the broken up, choppy pinpoint tone within the last few days. Before that it sounded just like the other Coinstrikes I've owned. I can only figure that it's the coil, I'm going to try and find a used one. Hopefully that's all it is...but like I said, it still seems to work fine. I'm still finding things and quite deep at that. I was always worried about losing depth by dropping the thresh and sens but lately I've been keeping it at -15 and 6 sometimes -20 and 6 and it actually seems to get better depth than running it hot. Where I've been hunting has pretty hot ground, my brother's AT Pro ground balances at 90.
