COINS

I'm new to this and have been reading allot on here. Every time I go through all my coins, I find out there's another thing I should look for. Could someone tell me what to look for? Right now, I'm looking for coins dated before 1964? and 1970s pennys?

Any penny before 1960...and quarter before 1965 any dime and nickel before??? and why??? The penny's because they are wheat, quarters because they are silver and why the dimes and nickels? On the 1970s's is it just that one or should I look for any penny with an "S"? Are ALL quarters before 1965 silver or just some?

Any and ALL of your help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

All quarters and dimes 1964 and older are made of 90% silver. Wheaties were made from 1909-1958. Pennies after 1958 aren't worth keeping. They're just clad. Nickels before the early 1950s are also not worth keeping, just spend them; however, anything below the early 1950s should be kept, depending on if you're into coin collecting. Pennies from the 1970s aren't worth keeping no matter what mint mark they have. By the 1970s they were being produced heavily no matter which mint mark they had. You can still find them in pocket change; however, its up to you if you want to keep them.

The thing to do get a book ,some coins are going to be silver ,some are not.But many newer coins are worth more than face value .cant just say from this year to this year is good or bad.check the book .

Invest in a "Red Book" and do a little reading. It's nice to have to see if any of the dates you find are rare. In general, dimes and nickels 1964 and before are silver. Halfs up to 1970 contain silver. Nickles from 1942-1945 contain silver but half those minted in 1942 are normal composition. Small cents cent coins 1958 and earlier are either wheats or indian heads. Seriously, for 10 bucks you should own a Red Book.

either get aRed Book or go to a news stand and pick up the latest issue of COIN PRICE GUIDE. Also pick up info on the internet on Mint Errors. A lot of them out there and many worth a bunch.

I use this site to check my coins worth. I also have the Official Blue Book by R.S. Yeoman 67th Edition. Good luck
