Coins, rings in heavy small iron.... help please

Okay so no silvers since the first hole dug a few days ago... but i have a question for experienced users. I got the at pro for two major reasons, water hunting and fast recovery speed. ( reset speed) i have alot of sites with tons of small iron.. I mean 150 years of small straight, bent nails, wire, staple looking things, tent stakes... you name it i have pulled it... im wanting to find the goodies hidden in the iron... so my question is.... what am i listening for? i have went for faint deeper sounding targets alot. I have slowed my swing speed way way down ajd listen to the higher tones amounst the low iron grunts.. I hunt with pro mode.. zero discrim. iron audio on.. sensitivity full of or one off of full.. using 5x8 coil.. am i set up right? i have ground balanced in clean ground... over nails.. and even dropped my number 10-15 lower than my ground balance. what do you experience guys do to sniff out that silver and gold in the iron?..

it sounds like you are doing it right. i have a couple of spots that i hit for super high iron. actually 3 in recent past. one hasnt produced a single thing. it just hasnt. the other two have produced coins amidst the iron. some of those have been pretty amazing recoveries. on many of those, i have noticed some higher tone that is pretty solid among the grunts. so, you are on the right track there. sometimes once i dig the plug and rescan, it's obvious that it is totally junk. sometimes it has been something like a big piece of copper that is deeper, etc.

i would definitely keep trying different sites. it does take time to learn when to dig and when not to. the great thing about this exercise is that you are really honing your skill in this environment. this will radically help your hunting in other environments. and the discipline of moving slow is a great one!

keep trying and let us know how it goes. im sure others have wisdom in this as well.

Probably wouldn't hurt to turn up the iron recrimination a little. I such a iron heavy area it would help reduce the iron tones and give the high tone a better chance to be heard. Watch the new Garret video, it explains it much better. than the old.

Everyone has their own settings that work for them...
I run in Pro mode,, zero disc.
Iron disc at 35
Iron audio on
Sens at full most of the time,,some times I drop it some..
I use the 5 x 8 coil most of the time, if it gets to trashy, then I switch to my other MY Pro that has the 4.5" coil on it....
The reason that I run with the iron audio on all the time is to help ID rusty bottle caps and iron....
In over a year, I bet I have not had the 8,5 x 11" coil on anymore than 3 or 4 times....
I hunt in trashy areas because some pass them by....
Yes my AT makes a lot of noise,, but there is no place for the pain to go,, LOL ....
I run at what the AT sets the GB at,,,,most of the the time,, its around 80,,,,if I can not find a clean spot to GB,, I set it at 80 and hunt...
I dig a lot of trash, if its deeper than 3 or 4 inches,, looking for coins and rings....

wow thanks guys. I really enjoy the tips. Can i ask, do you dig alot of trash iron? I know with my other detectors it falsed a ton with iron, and iended up diggin alot of false high tones with junk in the hole.. other than with the etrac on ttf. it did pretty good but was soo soo slow. Thats why im so excited with the pro. I know idealy you want a 8" or deeper target that hits at anydirection. But with iron i think you guys are right in most situations. All bets are off . IOne more question.... to find the goodies..... What would the numbers on a silver hit in on? I mean if mixed with iron? Would it give a mid tone? Would it stay higher? like 70and up? or drop into the 50's?

thanks
spencer

I agree with the advice above. In addition, I find the iron falling tone in trashy areas to be "sharp", whereas silver or clad coins peeks through with a "softer" tone in all swing directions.

Try running ur GB a bit more positive. Say if u GB at 78 go 2-3 clicks higher works for me...hh rick n mi.
