Coins on edge

foreign object

New member
About a month back I hit one of my favorite spots that has produced several silver coins and lot of wheat pennies. Using the stock coil the very first signal I got was a high tone 12/43-44 with a clunk at the end no mater which direction I hit it from. The depth meter was bouncing 10/11 inches. Dug down and at 9 inches was a 1918 merc in the side of the hole at about a 45 degree angle. Of course that set the tone for rest of the morning.

Fast forward to yesterday. Kept thinking about that coin I went out and buried a clad dime at exactly 6" and tilted to about the 1 o'clock position. Had the 6" coil on the CTX and started with it. I was a little disappointed when it had problems hitting it well enough to give me a want to dig.No mater which way I approached it the signal/tone was not good. I. was using combined/ferrous coin. Tried different setting but no real help was noted.

I then put the 11" coil on a it would hit it hard from any direction with a good high tone and good numbers.

I know that it is freshly buried but at the same time it does give some indication of what to expect. I was always under the impression that smaller coils were more sensitive than larger ones. Also the depth of the 6" coil is a factor also but to its defensive I have a dime buried at a solid 8" and the little coil will give me a dig me tone from any direction.

Decided to try my new 705 with the stock 9" MF coil. It hit the on edge dime with a very good dig me high tone with numbers bouncing between 36 to 42. Have a Digger and the 5x10 HF coil on the way. Don't expect much from the digger on the on edge dime but would like to think that the 5x10. with the higher freq will hit it with a dig me tone/numbers'
We will see

I was running wide open screen, manual sensitivity maxed out. There were a few places that this coil acted wonky, and I wrote it off as bad ground.

The signal bounces back off the flat surface of the coin at an angle and if the coil is small the return signal will miss the edge of coil. If you want to dig a lot of deeper on edge coins try the 17" coil :clapping:

That makes sense to me. Learn something every day.

I quess that I need to be looking at a machine with a small coil that will hit the rim of the coin without going to far into the higher freq. machines.

Was hopping the 705 with the 5x10 18.75 coil would do it but that did not happen May be a combination of to high a freq. to hit coins as well along with lack of punch in the 705.

Any help/sugestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for you guys replys.
