Coins in CW Campsites

I always hear about the seated half dimes and dimes that are found. Does anyone find Indian Heads? Found an 1860 IH in an area where I was looking for a camp and I'm thinking I have to go back and hunt that area hard.

I would hunt all around the place where you found the coin. You may get lucky and hit a good camp site. Bear

I find just as many IH pennies as anything else.. being it's 1860 you may be hot on the trail of a good site.

The IH and Flying Eagles are all I seem to find. Still waiting on silver to pop out one day.

I find IH pennys in CW camps quite often. They are not as glamarous as finding period silver or gold but they are important in dating a campsite. Fertilization usually does a number on them but if I can read the date on them I'm happy! If I were you I would definitely go back and sniff around the iron with a small dd coil. You may be suprised and find couple more! Good Luck!

Steve: One good way to check IH or any coin is associated with campsite is wear. Particularly with early camps like yours. The wear on the coin if dropped at the campsite and being 1860 should show minimal wear. An 1860 IH found in an 1864 campsite should show a lot of wear. Most of the coins I find are from the DEC 1861 "monthly" solders pay. These are always fresh and just minted on the east coast.

Great observation Dave! Tell tale signs that reveal the occupation of a campsite especially the wear on coins can prove invaluable in our research. I too follow the paymaster, hint hint! I see your a "gold coin" member as well, great 2 1/2 dollar coin...that is a beauty!!! Here's something to dream about tonight...and it ain't play money either LOL!

How much coinage per soldier could have been being carried around the site, begging to be lost by a pocket with a hole?
