Howdy from Colorado! We are lucky to have relatively good detecting weather this time of year - recently re-focused my digging efforts closer to home staying in the old neighborhood. Mike and I found a corner-lot house built in 1915 recently demolished and graded - so we spent a couple summer evenings sorting through the aluminum to end up with several Wheats & Indians between us...with Mike pulling a near-uncirculated Mercury dime near the end of that particular hunt!
Had a bit of a dry autumn without any rain for 2-3 months - it gets difficult to dig after that long of a spell so unfortunately the Deus sat in the corner for several weeks
After our first major round of snow melted, we then decided to visit a couple of older spots - and after much aluminum and iron targets we at last started to find silver coins again! Last Thursday I was lucky enough to dig the 1920 S Merc from several deep co-located nails! We've beaten the place to death and out of boredom and want for signals I turned the Disc to 0 and started pulling out ANY and ALL targets regardless of composition! Found a smeared, indistinct signal that markedly improved after pulling out the nails - in Full Tones the signal kept going up in pitch every time a nail was removed until it finally sounded "dime-esque"
Earlier this year I got lucky and found a used scintillator online that needed repair...took a gamble and ended up fixing it without much trouble! This scintillator is similar to a Geiger counter but MUCH more sensitive - took it to a neighboring county and so far have been able to zero in on pockets of "etched" zircons - some of these crystals are nearly 1/2" across! Also occurring with these zircons at times is columbite, the smaller black angular specimen in the photos. Not far away from these "hot pockets" a friend located a deposit of beautiful purple fluorite and quartz - this deposit is showing promise for larger crystals, however the season is drawing to a close for the year unless the weather holds...
Tomorrow I'm taking the Deus to this same area - discovered a large quartz outcropping that I need to search for gold. This will be my first dedicated GOLD prospecting hunt - and hiking on the way to this outcropping there once stood a cabin around 1900-1920 timeframe - so, of course it needs to be searched!!! Probably won't sleep too well tonight in anticipation - but looking forward to finding something awesome tomorrow!
