coins and iron targets

I have hunted in an area littered with iron and have found that a coin and iron object setting next to one another has register as foil and pull tabs. Just thought I would mention this, don"t know if anyone else has experience this or not.

Yes of course. Targets near each other affect the VDI reading. Fortunately, the MXT allows for a smaller, slower, more deliberate sweep. This, together with changing the coil trajectory, can help you sort the targets out. Of course, you can also switch to a smaller coil when working in these kinds of areas.

this is the primary reason why so many good targets get left behind by 'doubters.' Doubters are the folks who invest in a visual Target ID detector with the misbelief that they are 100% accurate .... NOT!
They doubt that a jumpy TID could be a coin or button. They doubt that a fluctuating 'coin depth' could be a good target. They might doubt, for a while, that all the experienced hobbyists who tell them to dig those 'iffy signals' know what we're talking about.
In due time, however, a savvy operator learns that masking trash is present far more often than a clean, pure-signal coin and they learn that you have to recover a lot of questionable targets to get a better quantity of the 'good stuff!'
Use a slower sweep and opt for a smaller-than-stock coil to help handle the conditions and you will be able to isolate more of the good and bad targets for a better TID.
That's why I encourage users of XLT and XL Pro and Classic III/ID/IDX Pro models to get a 5.3 BullsEye, and MXT users should consider a 5" EXcelerator coil. Personally, I like the little 5" Double-D, but if I didn't have one for my MXT then I'd contact a dealer, like RichardTN, and see about a 3x6 'Shooter' DD coil. For the MXT that would be my second pick for a small effective coil in trash.

I have just got the MXT, and have used it a couple of time. Thanks for the information on the small coils, I plan on installing one of the smaller coils very soon. I mainly hunt the beach, so I do dig all foil and tabs readings. My last detector was a Garrett Master Hunter from th 70s which I still have. Mybe I can master this MXT after awhile, The only problem I seem to have is being able to hear the detector sound off. Don't know, guess my hearing is not as good any more. I do use headphones, but maybe there is a set that would improve the sound.

Use relic mode. Listen for high tones and even broken high tones ( could be a partially masked coin ) Tones will tell you more than the ID if ya listen.

Sand Flea,
If you huning the beaches, forget the small coil, Get a 14 inch excellerator coil from Kellyco, This coil is T-Totally awesome in the sand, dimes and pennies easy at a foot got quarters in Atlantic City NJ. 18-20 inches deep. For the beach it's a must have coil on the mxt, Run relic mode 0 disc trigger forward , Dig it if it has a high or broken tone, low tones will always be iron, Put a piece of tape over the ID and go by the tones. Run the gain on 10 or the + #'s if conditions allow. I prefer the threshold just barely audible to just under sound, works great, Yeah white put out a 14 inch coil also, the have issues as did some of the excellerators, I'll stick with the ex. coils, I know they work, If it make some feel better they could always stick a whites tag on it ha ha ha .
