Coinmaster trouble

Hurricane Jane

New member
I hope I'm in the correct forum for this. If not, just point me in the right direction, I'm new here.

I own mostly White's detectors and have never had a problem with them. Not one issue. But my next door neighbor's little boy has a new Coinmaster and I've been helping him use it. He's 10 and pretty bright for a modern kid.

Problem is, this Coinmaster will stop working for several minutes at a time. The display is this there but not signals when the coil is in view of any metal. I've had this happen several times. What I do is shut it off and restart it. This works half the time. The other times I turn it off and remove the batteries for a second. Put it back together and it always works then. I do not have a good enough grasp of the electronics involved but have to guess you can "over load" the system? Maybe get too much junk in the ground and the detector freezes from fright? Anyway, it can be made to come around again, I just would like to know what's going on. Have never experienced this before in any MD I've owned or used.

Thanks, Jane

You may want to check with the dealer it was bought at or phone Whites to see what can be done with it.
Could be a defective unit.
I use three whites detectors and have never had problems with them.

Is this in discrimination mode or pinpointing? Have you tried a new battery or another coil? Also what is his sensitivity set at? Typically if the detector overloads you will get a very loud groan/grunt - but it shouldn't not detect the target. Now I've seen a good target get masked by a bad target. My suggestion take it to the dealer have him try another coil to see if the coil is bad - if it still does the same thing send it in to be looked over because some internal settings may be off.

Let me know what you find out either way - We'll make sure everything gets worked out so he can enjoy learning to metal detect.

I concur with Carolina Phil. Sounds like a speaker/ audio problem. Does it have fresh batteries? I had an older 6DB model and it started doing a similar thing. Apparently the capacitors break down in them when they get old and only run for a short time. I was lucky to get 5 minutes out of it before it cut out.

I have one also. My 9 year old uses it and we have had some of the same issue. I pulled the batteries overnight and we have not had the issue again. Although we are still getting some extreme noise from the unit as if the sensitivity is set to high. We are both new to MD and are still looking at different scenarios. We are going to try ours again Sunday to see if we get the same issues.

I wonder if the Battery holders arent doing there job and holding the battery in tightly.
I also noticed on mine that the connector going into the control box is a little loose.
