coinmaster 5500/d series 3

Hi all, first post here,
It looks like I might be returning to this great hobby, In the past I had a bounty hunter quick draw, a whites surfmaster 2, a radio shack VLF/TR thing which was more a toy then anything else.
and this is the only one left a coinmaster 5500/d series 3 black. I dug it out of storage a bit ago tested it and still works too. Been toying with the idea of upgrading. Tech. has advanced so much on these things it makes me think I really should upgrade.
This unit looks so similar to the 5900 series but with out target id on its meter.
Opinions wanted, is this metal detector still a good unit to use? or is an upgrade better to look into?

What coils can be used on this unit and where can they be purchased from if still available.? should I decide to get reacquainted with this one.
Thanks
Chris

HI CHRIS, NOTHING WRONG WITH THE 5500. GREAT DEPTH. A GOOD COIN HUNTER. DOWNLOAD A MANUAL AND IT WILL BE YOUR BEST FRIEND. I LOVE THE OLD WHITES. THEY ARE THE BEST. JEFF

Just bought a 5500d series 3. First time with this detector. Are there any tricks I need to know?

thanks
tom

which coil does the 5500d/3 come with and which coils work.
I just bought one from e-bay with the wrong coil (an XLT coil)

a 6.59 khz, 5 pin coil, started with the 2300 Series and was/is used up thru the Classics and then the XLT... see attachment info..only partial info.. Thanks Richard

Hi Chris,

The 5500d Series 3 is a great detector, Simple and fun and yours is even better it's mounted inside the newer black housing setup.

You mentioned upgrading, Well I had a Whites Series 3 black housing unit, Same as yours and what I did was rip out the 5500d circuit board and put in a Whites 6000 Di series 3 circuit board.

The meter on the 5500d will ID with the 6000 Di Series 3 circuit board, You will just need to replace the face plate or with a marker mark on the face plate were nickels, pennies/dimes and quarters come in. Plus, You just need to remove the headphone plug from the circuit board and add a harness so it mounts to the back of the black housing.

One more thing, You'll need to rewire the wiring harness running form the circuit board to the meter. Other than this it is a great upgrade for just a few bucks more. Sometimes you can pick up a used 6000 Di series 3 for about $100 bucks, It has to be the 6000 Di series 3 because the controls are mounted in the same location and both have the same kHz.

Coils from XLT, 5900 Di-Pro SL or 6000 Di-Pro Sl use a different kHz and will ID different, Be careful try not to use any of these coils.......The great thing is Fisher F-2/F-4 DD coil or any of the bounty hunter/Tekentics series coils will work with the Whites Series 3 detectors, You just need to get an adaptor or change out the plugs.

Below, Is my updated Series 3. The housing now supports a 6000 Di Series 3 circuit board.

If you ever do this mod, Keep in touch I'll help you.
