So, I picked up this unit. Practically brand new. Was missing the lower arm for the coil. Can anyone give any advice on useing this Grandaddy machine? I have been testing it on and off for about a week.I have the manual but get completey lost with the instructions. I heard good things about it, but what I would really like to know if the current coil's depth capabilities?
Someone suggested that I get a Blue Max 950 for greater depth? Any input would be fantastic.

thanks in advance.

P.S. We are in Souther California and are heading to San Gabriel river. Someone pulled out a 2.5 oz nugget about a month ago and with the recent rains we are heading uo about a half mile north of the bridge to "Nowhere"........

The Whites 4900 is a real 'workhorse' metal detector. Made to do it all. I would suggest the factory presets as tolerated. Unfortunately...the only Bluemax coil that you can use is the '256' widescan coil. This 4900 can only use the older '6B' coils. This marking is stamped on the coil mounting ears. There is a 4",10" and 15" coils available. Possibly a 12" hothead coil.

...Depends on what you want to do with it??...Also is this your first detector ??.....this detector was made to be able to hunt for gold Nuggetts one day...the next day go Relic Hunting and the next day go to the beach....long time ago a lot of the detectors were made to be Universal....but not anymore...some are limited to coins only especially if no other coils are available except for the Standard coil which on some is 6 inches across....Joe
