Coinless in Bath County

Hi all -

I have a DFX running a custom program I tuned for Western Pennsylvania - it works very well here - no trouble pulling coins from 8+ inches. I have never detected a property here where I've failed to find coins.

I've travelled to my brother's place in Bath County Virginia several times, detecting very old (200+ years) properties that have been continuously occupied, and I usually come away without a single find - very frustrating. Last week, we tried again, and detected a property that has been very busy through its 222 years of occupancy. We found not a SINGLE coin in 8 hours of detecting. I consider it to be impossible that no coins would have been lost in the approximately 2 acres that we searched.

Finally, I dug a 6-inch deep hole in a signal-clear area and buried a dime and a penny in the hole and refilled it. Neither of our detectors made a sound as we swept the spot!! I dug the coins up, and buried them again at a depth of 3 inches. My brother's Bounty Hunter didn't see anything there, and my DFX gave a broken iron-like signagraph response along with a sputtering audio.

What am I missing? Is the soil so mineral/iron-rich that the automatic ground balance is masking responses? Does anyone else detect in the western-Virginia area around Bath county?

FYI - I've only used a 10" DD coil in all my searching...

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Wow Freddy! That sounds weird. I'm sorry I can't help you with your question but I am very interested in an answer as well. I'm in Northeastern PA and I'm almost sure I'd have the same problem. Good luck and HH. Matt

the guys that hunt the civil war sites could probably answer that question....they always talk about the red virginia soil and how hard it is to get good signals ......i believe lots of those guys use pi machines in those areas.... hey next time you are down there take a bucket full of it home with you and see if you can come up with a better program to handle it better....good luck...

Thanks matthias - I'll definitely post an answer if I find one.

Thanks bootyhound for the good idea - my brother's coming up in a week - I'll have him bring me a bucket of dirt :) It's always hard to experiment in the field when you're trying to maximize your limited hunting time. With your suggestion, I can experiment at my leisure.

I am thinking soil too. There are pockets of this nasty dirt. One can go a few miles away from problem area and detector is fine. Excellent idea to grab a bucket of that soil for testing.

Yuppers...Soil is super mineralized, and getting a good GB is key...Sometimes you just cannot GB to it, and as stated the only way your gonna find anything is with different technology, like a PI machine...
