Coin$trike Day at the Beach DISASTER :hot:

I went to a beach in San Francisco yesterday afternoon to do my first beach hunt, and it was a much different experience then expected :detecting:

I'm hoping I can get some Coin$trike beach hunting tips.:nerd:

The first issue I had was ground balancing was nearly impossible. No matter where I put the coil (8") in all metal mode to GB, it was picking up metal, although in reality I don't believe there was metal on every square inch of the beach. I tried to switch between S0 and S1, and with S1 it sounded like it was cursing out R2D2, so I left S0 toggled on.

I ended up having to back my SENS down to about 3-4 and THRESH to -40, DISC was at 99 to keep the chatter down, although getting it to GB was still an issue (I enabled TRACKING thinking it might somewhat correct itself, which it did seem to do). While swinging I was getting quite a few +51 (hot rock) readings. A person I know who hunts there, said he's never encountered hot rocks there, so I suspect it was because the GB was iffy.

In a situation like this, should I start with SENS at 0 and move it up until it starts to chatter ?

Same with THRESH, should I start around -50 and move towards positive THRESH until it stops chattering ?

What do you do about getting it to GB at the beach (salt water, and I don't believe it had any black sand) ?

Should I GB on a near by lawn, enable tracking and see if it adjusts to the salt water beach itself ? Would the 10.5"

Any Coin$trike beach tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated. :surrender:

Thanks,
Cal

"Wet Sand ( Beach ) Hunting .

You can back up to page #15 also.

I believe following these procedures will help you the most.

Stick with the 8" coil, at least until your use to salt beach hunting.

Some of those CA. beach's can be real killers on some detectors. A few years back I had a just released CZ-7, and gave it it's maiden tryout on Imperial Beach, CA. I quickly discovered that I couldn't pick up a quarter over a couple of inches on the wet sand. My first lesson on Ca. beach's. :)

Hi Bill,

I made a cheat sheet and brought the tips from the owners manual with me, unfortunately they weren't that helpful.

I know this detector can do it, I just need to determine how to set it up. I've hunted in wet sand around where I live and it works great, but I believe it's the salt water that's the main culprit (and my inexperience).

I'm thinking I'll go back again this weekend, and start with the SENS at 0, and high THRESH and if that's stable, then I'll move the SENS to 1, and move the THRESH up, and so on and so forth until it's stable at the highest SENS setting.

Using S1 made the machine loose it's mind.

Thanks,
Cal

That's the same as ground balancing on top of metal.....I liked to balance in dry sand & then walk down to the wet stuff.
I had to play with several of the settings in order to run good on beaches here. Sometimes, salt off will do better......other beaches its salt ON......basically some experimentation is in order. I wish I could help more but our beaches on this coast are much different....

Bill

Hi Bill Ladd,

Thanks for your help. I'm not going to let that beach get the best of me , This weekend I plan to go back and try different settings until I figure out how to make the C$ happy :detecting:

The area I was at might not have any totally dry sand, as it's in a walled in yacht harbor (which is known to produce old silver). As the sand butts up against a wall, but I'll look for the driest spot and see how that works.

In the event that I'm not able to get a dry patch of sand, do you think it would work if I GB on the lawn on the other side of the wall, and then enabled Auto Tracking, it may self adjust to the changed ground conditions ? I think proper GB and then starting with the SENS/THRESH low and working them towards their hottest/stable settings will be the solution (or am I wrong ?).

Thanks!
Cal

worth a shot......but i know the last time i talked to mtdoramike, he was having some health problems and wasnt on the forums as much. But mike did have great success with the c$ on the beaches in florida. I believe Bugar also used the C$ on florida beaches as well.

Here is a tip get a new fisher like the F75 or for the beach get the F5.

^ Low-Boy what do you believe the F75 or F5 are going to do to make wet sand salt water beach hunting easier then the C$ ?

I know a lot of folks use the C$ for salt water beach hunting, but being a newb, I'm still learning the C$, so I don't believe it's the machine, but the user (at least at this point). I also have the F4, but I believe (possibly incorrectly so) that the C$ will do a better job then the F4.

Interestingly I was told that I should be able to ground balance the C$ on wet sand by an experienced beach hunter (although I don't believe he uses the C$), so I'll hit the beach again Saturday and try more settings and tests.
