coin to iron bounce

Hunted a mid 1800s school house the other day. This site is still occasionally used as a community center from time to time. I was amazed at the trash. Even with the 5'' coil every swing had multiple iron hits. I noticed that when I did get a high tone coin signal, when I scanned the area again it turned to an iron signal. OR, with a different direction it turned to repeated iron signals. I didnt' get ANY repeatable high tones, and I didn't dig ANY coins in about an hour. I checked a couple of the bouncing coin to iron signals and they were all trash. Rechecked the hole and nothing.
Any advise on sites like this? Maybe clear out a small area to reduce masking? I'm sure goodies are there, I just couldn't get to them!
Here's a pic of the school...

This place is similar to the ones I regularly go to. It sounds like your machine was working well and showing you the iron when you covered them again. Possible problems I see are
The site may have been detected many times and not many goodies are left.
5" coil may not be getting you deep enough.
Just keep on working slow. I rarely get a coin that doesn't repeat in 4 directions. I know others on here have luck with 2 way signals but I don't with my 3D. That's just my experience. I have dug a bunch of trash to verify this.
Be patient. Good Luck. It looks like a site with good potential.

This appears to be right next to a main highway and indeed may have been scanned many times and the 5 inch coil only goes so deep. Judging from the junk and mineralization maybe not huntable with a CZ as some of our deep seeking units are not fast machines.
Might look in the general area for a large tree etc. where children may have flocked at recess time or some of these areas actually had groves behind them and areas such as this were used for many functions way back when.As far as repeating signals if you spend any time with a CZ you will learn 10 inch plus deep targets may only repeat from two directions and may have a hard time getting the second repeat signal as it is. In addendum if you research you will find there are units out there that are fast and a dedicated hunter will have one of these for such an area. Indeed Dave is right going slow and being patient may put a goodie or two in the pouch as under these conditions tough to work out such an area. Over the years have actually hunted areas that were not huntable, but did have pockets where perhaps it is huntable. To me looks like walk a mile for an indian head, but those that persevere are usually rewarded..

I too have found areas (pockets) in a place riddled with iron that are easier to hunt. I am still in the process of doing an 1820 vintage house that has iron probs in varying degrees. One section is so bad that my ears are ringing from the coin/iron pings every few inches. Another section is more moderate bit still trashy and I have made some good shallow finds in that area. Still another large part of the yard is so iron free that I can use my 10.5" coil in it.
Dan's right when he says you may have to walk a mile to collect an IH. But if it's the best site you have available, make the most of it.

Like Dan Pa mentioned.
The easy pickins may have been cleaned up by others already.
You need to dig up some of the iron to see what it is.
If its nails then you may just have to be a little more selective in choosing spots with a little less accumilation of nails.
If you find a lot of metal junk , hardware ( hinges, glass, door parts , etc)around the building it probably means this is not the very orginal but built after original have been torn down or partially repaired. If its metal pieces from metal roofing then you are in for almost an impossible hunting situation.
I had similar problems with metal roofing pieces and gave up . Just plain to much digging for nothing.
All those old buildings had outhouses some where .Also kids played near the building during recess. But not necessarily up against the building. Scanning the grounds out away from the building may be more productive then up against the building. Scanning the grounds about may become a sort of detective work for you. I have made a game of it so to speak when I was just plain looking for someplace to detect and came up with some suprising info at times. I had found where an actual battle during revolutionary times must have taken place other then where the historical markers and some buildings where located, stating this is where , etc. It actually was those markers and building were more for tourist attractions and convience of historians not really doing a fine tune location. Which made it nice for me as no detecting on the historical site. I did not need to. I believe my historical site a lot more accurate. Especially when I did my own research a little later.
But not to do gloom , but how many people attended this school, just how many possible coin drops would you expect to be there , did they have any picnic or other outings at that place, and how many people attended.
I am mentioning this not to make a research of it but to just imagine the possiblity of finds that may be there. Of course that single valuable find but thats like the lottery winner. What time period is involved that kids had coins in their pockets to loose, school lunches where brown bagged not bought.
If there was an old country store near by then penny candy type of pocket change maybe.
An old high school ,or church that type of place increases your odds tremendously compared the one room school. If the places to detect have just a small amount of people then they should be almost virgin places to detect and not covered over by massive amounts of junk, as the time and work to do searches becomes pretty valuable in itself . As the time spent in better places would be much more enjoyable.

Hey Wayne, I want to thank you for posting this message, as you really save me the trouble! Other than the Schoolhouse Factor. I was hunting (2) 100+yrs. old city parks with my CZ-70Pro and ran into the same exact senario, without the Old Schoolhouse. What few coins I did dig, I really had to work VERY HARD for!
However, I did recover a small SPILL CACHE of about 40 cents in change. But, NO SILVER! However, I did get a small piece of what looks like a BROKEN GOLD Chain. But, I have to clean it up, inorder to know for sure.
Also, MANY THANKS to Dan(Pa), and WVAdirtdigger for taking the time to respond. Because, I was going to post the same request for assistance.

Like others said, the site may have been hit hard. I have found very rarely if I slow down that I don't get a couple of good coins that others passed up. While I don't have a CZ70 I do have a 3D. I have discovered if I get a fairly loud coin signal at the front tip of the coil, it doesn't bounce and it doesn't cross it's a coin close to some other trash. Go very slow and overlap alot. I have also found that in iron sometimes a bigger coil is actually better at picking out coins in the iron. Cover the area with all of the coils you have and go slow and overlap as I said. I will also go diagonal to the natural 'lines' of the site. I will not go parallel with the building but at an angle out away from it. Iron can hide coins very well but with persistance you can find some real keepers. I seriously doubt it's cleaned out unless it was an excellent hunter which are rare even in my area of an over population of detectorist. The other thing to try is to back off on your sensitivity. Instead of seeing the iron at 6 inches it will help see at coin less than 6 inches that would have been masked by your sensitivity being too high. There are tons of way to approach a site like that. Hope my suggestions help you some... Good Luck and HH!

I'll share with you guys some of the research I found about this place. There's a state historic sign out front. Here's what it says:
Poplar Ridge School had its beginning in 1858 as a one-room log building. The existing late Classical Revival frame building was built circa 1875. A late Victorian fa

Here's another good site that has links to info on old schools, parks, etc. with terraserver and map links is http://www.hometownlocator.com/ once you enter your county and state... click on the link that says '(Your County Here) County Physical Features & Cultural Features' ... there's links to useful info.

Wayne,
I think the info on the one I told you about is the same list as the peabody site but in a different format. Thanks for pointing that out though.

Are you hunting at -0- or -1- discrimination? If at -1- drop to -0-; and shorten your swings. You will not get as many iron spikes coming in at tab or coin at -0-.
I hunted a similar site with a 10" loop, after no good signals with a 5", and started pulling out coins. I pp
each signal exactly, then shorten the sweep as much as possible, plus picking up the sweep speed; sens. was at 7, audio at regular.

Am using the cz70, nothing notched in ID mode. Sens usually 4 to 6. Ground balances around 6.

and it's about 1.5 acres .Except for about 30' of street frontage it's all old and has iron nails, plowshares and old fencing.I have been over this place about 60+ detecting hrs from every angle conceivable and get hits that weren't there during previous tries. I figure it's gotta be the angle of iron vs good targets the amount of iron vs good targets and type of good target say copper vs brass or silver and target size.Different sweep angles must produce different conductivity vs ferrous readings that chime when one overpowers the other and hence the bounce that prompts a dig.I don't think there is one answer as what target response to dig if you know the site after all the cherry picks are done go for the bounces and try different coils or detectors.HH Bill
