Additionally, and to add insult to injury as it were, many of the Coinstrike and ID Edge coils that will work on the C$ were made from the same bad batch of cable...
...the ones where the insulation 'shreds' to expose the wires underneath.
A tip for any user of Fisher coils from that same era:
Especially if you purchase a used coil...if it's obviously been wound one direction, use it that way.
Once it's taken a 'set", don't try to wind it the other way.
It might eventually shred like spaghetti...like three of mine did.
For example, lots of folk like to wind the coil so that the cable goes 'under' the rod for the first wind.
The theory being, that gets it further away from the smaller/inner receive coil.
I've found no empirical proof this helps at all, and in fact, when the coil inevitably folds flat while you're digging, it puts a tight 'kink' in the coil cable and strain relief.
So I like to put the first wind 'over' the rod...and use velcro tape to keep the cable from flopping. (and also prevent falsing)
So of course, when I got two used 10.5" coils and one 8" that had obviously been wound 'under', I insisted on winding them 'over'.
It took less than a week for one of the 10.5" to completely shed every inch of insulation.
The poor think looks pathetic, and of course, is no longer remotely waterproof.
The other two have also started the inevitable shedding, and will eventually look the same.
