Coin Shop

OK I need some ideas. If you had $1300.00 to spend in a coin shop what would you buy. I plow snow for a pawn shop & take it out in trade, my first thought was to buy a $20 gold piece but they do not have any. They do have some old Spanish gold & just about everything else but I don't know if I should buy one or two higher price coins or buy several lower cost ones.

Boy, that would be a hard call. Let's see..................Diamonds are a girl's best friend. One bad thing about a pawn shop......they won't know if they're going to get a $20 gold coin in either.

Whatever coin(s) you end up with bula, I'd be willing to bet as soon as you get them you'll probably go out and find the same one(s) yourself. Have fun deciding. That's a predicament we'd all like to be in. I know nothing about coins so I can't give any suggestions but I'd like to see a post with pics when you decide.
HS ( happy shopping )

Bula,
Always buy the best that your money can buy.
Rare items will always be rare and increase in value.
That is not to say that common items won't increase, just not at the higher rate.
Of course that is if you are looking for investments. If you are buying because you just like something, by all means get what you like.
This of course is just my humble opinion.

HuntinDog said it best... go for a semi key coin or better. The higher grades/scarcer coins appreciate much faster.

For an investment purpose I don't know if I'd want to spend it on a gold coin at this stage.
Gold won't always be as high as it is now, in my opinion, but who knows how long
it will hang in there. On the other hand if you just want it to have it, well then by all
means buy it.

OK, hear you go, I went shopping this morning (I coundn't go hunting cause the wind was blowing 40mph + & it was starting to snow AGAIN. Like a kid in a candy store it was hard to decide what to get so I picked up a lillte of everything. Some old & rare, some with good mm & some with error.
First is a 1857 flying cent with a lamation error VF
1908 s IH in VF
1881 3 cent with doubling on most of the lettering VF
1882 O over S in MS63
1884 CC in MS 62
Last & the oldest Phocas from AD602-610 4.1 grams 24K gold Constantinople mint
Even though I pay a higher price at the Pawn Shop, they pay me well for the work.
Some I bought because I did not have any in that series others just cause I like them.

That's the way to do it Bula. They look great and you picked out some winners. HH and HP (Happy Plowing), Nancy

Coins are a good investment especially old ,errors, rare.
They will appreciate more with time. Forget that you have them in a secure place
Silver coins are a good bet as this rare metal will always go up in value.

I agree with Joel-Winnipeg, Silver is very affordable and I believe underpriced. I am waiting for the day the price skyrockets...

Panther:
It already HAS shyrocketed. :)-) I just can't see it
getting much higher, in my opinion. Still............you never know.

I guess if you buy coins just for the enjoyment of having them and
not interested in the investment end, why not. We only go around once.....or
so I'm told.

That is the hard part, buy for pleasure or for profit. I like the Morgans and wanted a few better dates, the gold coin I was told was under priced & was a great deal. After getting home I did some research on it & found that I paid about top value for it, I am torn between the value of it & how old it is. Just to think of who made it & what it has gone through is amazing but I would have rather had a U.S. coin. The only U.S. gold they had was a $2 1/2 Indian, that was way over priced & I all ready have one. I will most likely sell it in the future to buy American.

We all have our own reasons for liking one thing or another, it is like the Civil War relics that are posted here like the the bullets. We do not have any of that out here so I does not seem such a big deal for me, but if I lived further east my thoughts would change. Hell we are lucky to find anything older than 1860, but it is all fun. Thanks for the replies & HH to everyone.

Just an idea , maybe be a good Idea to have them graded. Could add some value and they will all be protected. You got a sweet deal goin there with the shop. Next time ask if you can have them hold the coins for 1 day so you can check'em out first.
Coolness!

They will hold them for me, the reason I bought the gold coin without doing research was I had some inside info that they were going to raise all the prices on the gold. I thought about getting the gold coin & the 1882 o/s graded, the gold one just for authenticity, & the 1882 because if it will grade ms 63 it will triple the value from what I paid for it. I am just not sure where to send them as I have never had a coin graded?.

The American Numismatic Society headquarters is here in Colorado Springs. They grade and authenticate coins for a modest price and their authority is absolute.
Hope this helps!

If you are going to buy gold coins as an investment, I personally believe that you should not buy proof or rare coins unless you specifically want them. Ordinary gold coins will always be worth scrap value but you can not guarantee getting your money back on a Proof or rare coin if and when you need it. It is a dealers market.
I had a bloke wanted to swap some of my gold nuggets for diamonds once. When I said that diamonds were not worth buying for investment he agreed and said he hadn't been able to get anyone to take them.
I took a gold ring into a Jewellry store to sell it for scrap as it was broken. The Jeweller said he would be happy to take the gold but I could keep the diamonds in it as they were not worth anything. Unless you have an avenue to sell precious metals etc, just be very careful or else your 'investment' may turn out to have been not such a good idea.
Katz.. There are those that believe that silver may one day be worth much more than gold due to its' rarity and uses in satellites, phones and many other things, and specifically health and medical uses. It is a much better conductor than gold and no virus or pathogen can survive more than 7 minutes when it comes into contact with silver. They even use silver filters on the space station for their drinking water. Marvellous stuff! Then again I keep all the old pennies I find too as one day the humble old copper will be worth trading in. Copper will play a huge role in free energy and anti gravity and that is taking enormous strides right at this moment, though few folks realize what is going on...

Panther I agree with you on the metal issue, as for the gold coin I bought I would have rather had a U.S. coin but they didn't have any good ones. I will trade the one in I got some day for something else as the info I got was this coin was under priced.
