COIN SHOOTING WITH A GOLD BONUS

Some may be still limited by the weather up north,so just a little reading material until the spring thaw.I found these finds last December, but a neat story,as to you never know what is under the coil.

I decided to go coinshooting and a great looking place that I had been driving by came to mind. This was an old home site back off the highway. The appeal was an old Tavern long since been closed out in front of the home, as well as all the giant oaks around the home.

I got up early and drove out to the home and as I was walking to the front door I noticed an old water well. After seeing that, I was even more excited considering the past activities that went on around this old home. The home owner gave me permission and requested to see what I found. I told her I would be glad to show her. I was there about an hour and had a great time. My finds were 5 Wheaties, 1 1951 rosie, 1 1924 mercury dime, and oh yes the gold.

While detecting under one of the giant oaks, I got a good deep penny reading , but there was also an iffy reading that kept creeping in. I dug the plug, folded it back and began to pick the penny out of the hole. I could see the end of a gold chain sticking out at the middle of the hole. I thought

Thank you for sharing your story and congrats on the finds!! I'm one of those up in the frozen North and can only get my detecting excitement thru the success stories of others that are Blessed to live in warmer climates.

Trees are so awesome. In the Charleston area we worship old oak trees. We got one near us called the angle oak tree that is something like 2,000 years old.Google angle oak tree and see it for yourself.People sit under these trees to get out of the rain, sun, etc. There is always something lost under one of these old oak trees. Thanks for sharing the story goldcoin. :yo:

Yep. Very old trees are great. BUT here is one small problem. You never know where one used to be that died, or was cut down. There is a park here that had a ton more in it when I was growing up and most are dead and gone. So you can hit a spot in the middle of nowhere in a park with lots of good finds and guess there was some shade there of some kind back before air conditioners and it could have been a large tree.

Before cars and mass transportation people went to local parks. No TV either. EVERYONE had fun outside. You met people. Thats one reason porches used to be so popular. People would sit on them and greet others as they walked by.

Very nice gold chain. Looks pretty heavy!! Ohh and my 1893CC 10.00 gold piece was suposed to be a zincoln at 5" deep. So your absolutely right. People that go by their meters are for sure missing good targets. It was in a park.

Yep! Nice to see and read about your finds! I read an article that said kids spend an average of 24 hrs per week in front of a computer, and only 2 hrs outside. Our hunting strategy has to figure into this drastic a shift.
