COIN SHOOTING OR FINDING NICHOLS ?

What I'm going to say here is from my experience only, I'm not trying to tell you how to md or what settings. I started out mding with a qd2 and I thought I had gotten pretty good with it. I was finding a few Nichols but not as many as I thought I should be. My sens./on off switch went out on the qd2 so I sent it back to Texas for repair. Not wanting to wait for it to return I bought me a t4 for back up. Well listening to the fine people here on the forum that uses the t4 thats how I started out with my settings. Now anybody that owns one knows it has only 2 tones and no target ID. Well I started finding 2 and 3 times the Nichols as I did with the qd2, I'm not trying to say its a better machine, but I find I can pin point faster and better with it. To make a long story short you don't have a target ID, you have only the 2 tones to rely on. True I do dig more pull tabs but I'm finding Nichols and some old ones too. I do disc. out the medal/iron when coin shooting. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you want to find it you have to dig it and quit looking at the target ID, the machines just aren't that smart yet to be 100% right(this is what the experenced users have been saying over and over). PS I have had days when I have found more Nichols than quarters just depends on where I'm huntn. hh

I agree Sir. I have a Time Ranger and usually set it on P1 so that it notches iron and then I go 'all metal' to pin-point. I dig everything cause it just might be interesting junk.

Not trying to be obnoxious, but I would really am curious to know if you intend to dig everything all the time why would you buy a detector with all the bells and whistles?......Jack

Hi jackintexas, thats a good ?, when I got into mding and bought the qd2 I didn't know a thing about mding, just always was interested in doing it so I bought the 1st md I found without having to order it(thought I would learn as I went along, didn't even know forums exsisted). I don't dig everything all the time, but I do dig good repeatable signals and yes I do dig a lot of pull tabs and yes I am finding more of the good stuff(when coin shooting). An example of why I dig all good repeatable signals: read the post on this forum titled Did a little experiment with gold and sterling Dated May 30,2008. This is what I do and it works for me. Hope this answers your ? Good luck and hh

Hey Beavertail: Thanks for the relpy. I understand now. Good reply. I have been detecting for thirty years. Have owned about fifty detectors. Now own twelve. (You may ask me why so many detectors). I really don't know .several I have had for many years. But you answered my questiion very weLL Was just wondering.....Jack

Your wecome jackintexas, I will have to admit I jumped into mding blind but I'm glad I got into it, sure wish I had started a long time ago as I enjoy it very much. hh

Why own a 'bells and whistles' detector and dig everything in sight? It's because I am a lazy cherry picking bum.
--Doug Detecting Strategy--
1] Cherry pick the site from north/south
2] step 1] from east/west
3] Dig everything that beeps on entire site
4] repeat step 3] every few months
--Lazy Bum Detecting--
1] Use 'sniff' feature on P4 of Time Ranger to target desired coin type
2] Dig only solid signals
3] Wonder what I am missing for being a lazy bum
Most days I try to dig everything, but sometimes I am a lazy bum even though it makes me wonder. I will cherry pick a trashy site to death. Then feel guilty for being lazy and clean it out. Half of my regular sites are fields of silence punctuated by a sporadic tone or two. One day all of my regular sites will be the same [except for one]. I hit one site where there are two other regulars and it is competetive. I mean competetive enough that I have caught one planting trash! I only cherry pick that site and I only go when they are there. [GRIN] You want to see angry blaze through a site pulling coin after coin while the competition fumbles to catch up. Sure its mean spirited. But if I can clean up their trash and fill in their holes I can treat them like the clowns that they are. Oh one has an F-75 and the other a Whites. Go little TR! [GRIN]

I have only encountered one other detectorist while I was out hunting....He was swinging a Minelab Explorer SE...."Just got it!", he says...I said "cool!", with a big crap eating grin...I went right behind him about 20 yards back, and was cleaning up what he missed because of being new with his detector...I watched him become more frustrated as he went....He kept glancing back with dirty looks, and I kept on smirking...Finally, he asked me what mode I was hunting in, and I said "Brain Mode with a tad of Discrimination."(Disc mode with DISC knob at about 9 o'clock)...He looked at me funny and said, "What do you mean?"...I told him I had been swinging the Land Star for about a year, and had gotten to know how she spoke to me...I told him detecting is 10% machine, and 90% brain...He just looked at my BH and I swore I heard him growl under his breath....LOL...Gotta love it!
I will have to shoot some pics of Wood's Field the next time I go out...It is pretty big (3 ball fields) and measures about 300 x 150 yards...I have been hunting it in sections, but I tend to dig all signals except iron and zinc mostly...every now and again, I dig a zinc signal just so I can say I checked a percentage of em....
