Coin search coil depth

dirt lizard

Member
I have an original soverign with a coin search coil. My question is which is the coin search better made for beach or inland? I took it out to a near by park and was getting signals no deeper then 3-4 inches. It seemed like it was just skimming the surface for finds. When it hits the beach I get a depth of 6-8 inches on finds. I ran the machine in auto and all metal trying to get a change in depth while at the park. Why is this? Thanks

I have the GT and when I run it in Auto I find that depth suffers greatly. I always run in Discriminate and set Sensitivity as high as I can without a bunch of false signals.

The only time I use auto sensitivity it is a last resort. There are some black sand areas and EMI areas where the self correcting auto sensitivity is the only option. But as already stated auto sensitivity is not very deep. I also run in discrimination mode with the sensitivity turned as high as possible without horrible falsing. I can usually get to about 11:00 position on the dial. After that the salt water starts making too much noise.

So what I should do is not use it in auto. I'll run it in disc mode from now on.

George and Goodmore are right on with the sensitivity as auto is good to learn the Sovereign, but if you want the depth than auto is the way to go. There are other factors for depth too is how well you know your Sovereign, good headphones and going slow to. The Coinsearch coil is one of the best coils to learn the Sovereign with and the depth is awesome once you know your detector well as I have dug coins over 12 inches deep with that coil in a park, but they were some very weak signal and I had to go real slow too, like maybe less then a foot a second in order for the coil to see them.
One of the things in my opinion is the original Sovereign for me didn't have the depth the others do, but some feel it is and I tried 2 different ones after I learned my Sovereign XS and I was not impressed at all with the 2 I tried, I think my deepest coins was around 4-5 inches.
The Sovereign is a different detector and most will tell you they though they made a mistake at first getting one, but those that learned them will probably tell you they are one of the best detectors if not the best they have ever used and will always have a Sovereign in their line up of detectors.

Good Luck and good hunting.
Rick

Rick, I believe you meant to say that if you want the depth, then auto is not the way to go...

If you haven't already, you may want to read my book on the Sovereign/Excalibur for some hints & tips on using them. You can read if for free by following this link that's at the top of these threads...

My deepest coin find using the Sov. XS/8" coinsearch coil was at least a foot deep. It was a Liberty V nickel, and was found in a park, in Florida. It was a faint, smooth, repeatable signal that got, if I remember correctly, better/louder the deeper I dug. I know it was that deep because I had almost given up on finding it, when I, finally, dug it out of the very bottom, center of the hole. The ground was packed pretty tight at that depth so I know for a fact that the coin didn't just fall down in to the hole from a shallower depth.I was impressed, to say the least.

I was going to mention the volume control at max but the Original is preset with no control knob.Good Luck Ron
