Coin search coil depth PT 2

I took the soverign out to an old football field using the coin search coil. Machine set at Threshold at 12oclock, Sens set at full not using auto, Iron mask on, and disc on. I was only getting a depth of 5-6 inches on every signal of 180. picking out clad dimes while my friends elite was getting silvers with a tornado 800 coil at 2 -3 inches deeper. I'm about to get ready to trade this coin search coil off. Any takers ?

The Tornado coil is one of my favorite coils. In bad ground conditions I can usually run my sensitivity to the max, which the 10 inch Tornado may require the sensitivity to run lower. With the sensitivity set different with these two coils to adjust for bad ground conditions the smaller Tornado can match the larger coil in depth performance at some sites. The Coinsearch coil is a great coil but IMHO the small Tornado is better.I notice one on Ebay at a decent price and with the sale of the Coinsearch coil should take the sting out of the purchase price.HH Ron

Wondering why you mention "threshold set at 12oclock"? It should be set to where it is barely audible. Is that the position on your machine where the threshold is barely audible?

Are you ground balancing the detector before hunting? I like HighPlainsHunters methods. Just in case you have not tried them ... http://www.findmall.com/read.php?21,2154099

What kind of depth can you get in all metal?

Are you using the original Sovereign?? being you say iron mask on. The only other Sovereign that had where you could run it on or off is the GT which I know should have the best depth. Now the original Sovereign the 2 I had tried just didn't get the depth I can get on the other Sovereigns, so if you have one of the original ones I would check the signal of your Friends Elite and see how these signals compare and you will see why I didn't like mine like the other Sovereigns..
I do have a 8 inch coinsearch and swear by it as it has done well for me and I did get a 8 inch tornado coil last summer, but never used it yet to compare myself and hear the only advantage is the Tornado coil is waterproof.
To get the best depth you have to know your Sovereign and go very slow and listen close to those tones.

Good luck,
Rick

I was listening to all the soft tones and walking to a crawl. I know the Ron's meter doesn't lie . My friend found a deep silver and told me to wave my coil over it. I did and got no reading of a silver. The mercury dime was the depth of his pin pointer. I do have the original soverign and my friend uses an elite. Both the original and the elite both run on the BBS and same frequency so my only thought would be the coin search coil didn't have the depth the tornado 8 inch has.

Regardless of what coil you have on your Sovereign you must slow down and listen very closely to the tones. I have dug wheat pennies at a measured 9 inches. The vast majority of coins that I find are shallower. Depth of a coin is dependent on the type of soil, how much clay Etc.

Recently I went to an area that I have worked many times. I dug six good targets. Each of them had a nail, bolt, screw etc in the immediate area with them None of them registered a 180 on the meter. I dug them because the Sovereign GT gave me a bit of that real high tone that says DIG.

Lots of factors come into play....coil height...swing...he went over them u didnt. Point being..... u needed to compare some targets.

I agree with Rick. It's not the coil, it's the Original Sovereign. Just not as deep a detector. The coils are actually equal in that they are both 7 and 1/4" each.

The Coinsearch is a true 8 inch coil and the Tornado is a 7 1/4 inch coil.Correct there are two different Sovereign's being used which this could be another factor. My suggestion trade coils next time you search with your friend and check each other targets. With the coil switch on these two different Sovereigns you could determine if its the Sovereign model or coil that gives the depth advantage.Good Luck keep us posted this would be a interesting test.

Hi Ron, The Coinsearch is not a true 8" coil because it's inner windings don't go to the edges of the coil. I believe Ralph from Sunray proved it when he opened one up for testing. He said it's the same 7 1/4" as the epoxied BBS and Tornado coils. Just an FYI. HH George

Actually the Coinsearch 8" coil windings are only 7 1/4" - the same as the later spider coils. A pancake coil windings do not go all the way out to the sides of the housing as they must be padded, unlike the solid epoxy coils which are embedded in solid epoxy. We had the "8" Coinsearch coil open many years ago and it had 7 1/4" windings. Very few people know that fact unless they have opened one.

Ralph would know for sure! I know my Excal 800 coil sure looks tiny next to other makes of 8 inch coils! [Yes I have put a tape to it I know what it measures ]
