The best place to shoot coins in most homes is an empty(white) bathtub. Most bathrooms are especially well lit(no flash to distort coins) and set the perfect stage for a good coin shoot. Jimmy G

I tried that and the wife yelled "GET OUT OF HERE WITH THAT CAMERA! I'M TAKING A SHOWER!!" :D

I understand you there. After being married long enough you can't remember what a naked woman even looks like. Our married sex life is only doggy style. I sit up and beg and she rolls over and plays dead...

Harhar, good one!

For photograaphing things like coins, I like bright indirect light and I perch the coin on a short pedestal to give it a little separation from the background and a more interesting shadow.

If your camera has the macro setting use it but "don't" use the zoom with it, it will not focus with the zoom.

Best to crop and downsize with the software that came with the camera or whatever software you use.

You can reduce the size ( in KB) when you "save as".

Yes, it does do a great job. I also scan the ones I post.

Enjoyed the link to the tips.

What camera are folks using?

It happens that I may be looking into a replacement pocket digital and I'm wondering what folks are using. I been using a cheap Olympus pocket unit and it's been doing some weird things lately, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to get something new. The few things I do like on my Olympus is I can drop in in my pocket, takes 2 "AA" batteries, has both macro and super macro, and was cheap in price, takes 640x480 stills so I don't have to re-size for forum posts, and can take it on the fly so if somethings happens to it I won't feel real bad.

I have a bigger digital but it's like a 35 SLR size so it wont fit in a pocket, and the lowest quality setting is still to big for forum use without having to go through all that re-size stuff. Besides, it just seems to generally sit around and I'm lucky if I use it once or twice a year. It has 12x optical zoom which I like for family events i.e. drag races, boat races, air shows etc. But this does not work for me for detecting use.

What I really liked on my cheap Olympus is you can be an idiot like me and still make pics somehow work half way.
Here is 2 pics pics with it where I sat in a chair, placed a heavy piece of cloth on my leg and laid the coins on it. No flash and in either macro or super macro, can't remember which it was. Then held the camera and snapped a couple. I liked the simplicity and how it fit in a shirt pocket.

Those pics look pretty good to me. I've had cameras for years, took pics for fire dept. for 25 years. Stared with Brownie box camera, then to 35mm, now digital. Like I said, your pics look great.

I been looking a little for a replacement. Sometimes this little Olympus doesn't hold the pics. I'll hook the usb cable, and all the pics are not there. Strange that when I delete pics off the camera, on next start up they are still there. Even when I do "All Erase". I tried reset. Well never had these problems before.
So once I get to that point, in the trash and something for a replacement.
Here are a I just took from a hunt yesterday. I don't know why the difference in coloration. Both are 87D and I placed the copper coloration one next to it to help define the color difference. I thought it was a steel war cent at first. just seems strange.

That 87D is strange patina...Wonder if someone was messing with the chemicals or put it through an electroplating proccess??? Very cool though...I had one once that looked like it was gold colored

HH,

tab-nabit, Try formatting your card in your camera.

the $500 is a darker color - I should have stated $100
Sorry for the mistake.:veryangry:

Sometimes a planchet (coin blank) will sneak through that is missing one or more of the clad layers. If that's what your coin is, it's a mint error. Just a guess, but it might be worth checking on the internet or taking it to a coin dealer.

I have an extremely rare error. A $.25 stamped out of $.50 stock. I bought it for $.25 from a kid who wanted a Coke and could not get the coin into the Coke machine. I didn't realize what I had untill the bank gave it back to me when I took in my change jug. I have never found a value on it, but I would never sell it.
