Coin or Trash

Hi Guys
When im Detecting with the x-terra 70 i get a lot of good signal target id's which read 32 $1.00 coin or a 30 $2.00 coin. How do i hunt the smaller coins eg 5 and 10 cent coins as these read as a pull tab or trash. The 1 cent 2 cent and a lot of pre-decimal read 42 on the target id which is no problem, when i do hunt areas i like to go slow and do a thorough job. Any advice would be graetly Appreciated.
I live in Australia so our coins probrably read differently to the USA.
Cheers Gary.

G'day Gary,

5c read 8-10.
10c read 12-14.
20c read 20-22.
50c read 24.

Of course bits of foil, some pulltabs, chopped up cans etc can read the same as above.
So do many gold jewellery items.

Learn to use prospecting mode. It will save you many hours of frustration. I mostly use coin and treasure only to confirm its a coin.

Cheers.

Lou.

Thanks Lou
Do You use prospecting mode on an iffy signal? And does the prospecting mode blank out rubbish but sounds good on a signal worth digging? Thanks Mate.

Hi Gary,

Short answers... no and yes.

Long answers... I mostly hunt for modern currency in parks, playgrounds, ovals etc.
As such, modern currency will not be deep and so will give a loud, very short and sharp signal.
The only things to give an iffy signal will be small pieces of crap shallow or large pieces of crap down deep, including predecimal coins which except in exceptional circumstances are virtually worthless and as such, not worth trying to recover with a screwdriver.

Prospect mode has an iron mask feature that enables you to discriminate out ferrous.
This can be set from 1 to 20. When passing over a ferrous object the machine will go quiet or "null".
The problem with this feature is that it takes seemingly forever for the tone to return from the null and you can sweep over and miss targets while its still in null.
I prefer to not use this feature but run in all metal.

After a while, maybe a long while, you can train your ears to decipher all the machine is telling you and only switch to coin and treasure to check the TID to confirm its what your looking for.
I believe prospect generally goes a fair whack deeper than C/T, another good reason for using it if your one of the seekers of deep relics.

So thats how I use prospect, but remember, I seek modern coins in shallow ground in relatively junk free areas.

Cheers.

Lou.

Hi Gary.
Lou has covered some good points. In prospecting mode, you hear everything except iron, if it's dialed out. Just remember what he said about listening to the audio. Most folks don't hunt in this mode though. Nothing wrong with it. It's just that folks prefer to use the visual reference. I wouldn't mind having a crack at it myself though, when I get around to upgrading my 30.
Pull tabs hit in the same area as a 10c piece. You can tell them apart in coin mode by bringing the coil over the target from several angles. A 10c piece will give a consistent number and the pull tabs will make the numbers jump all over the place.

Thanks Mick
Thats helped me out alot!. Now i will try the 7 different directional method as you discribed and see how it goes.
Cheers Gaza.
