Coin Hunting

Moxie

New member
I'm new to the Garrett family and have only owned one about 2 weeks and iv already found a 1700's georgivs copper coin a 1943S walking liberty half, 1898 barber dime, 1943 1918 1937 merc dime, 1958 Roosevelt dime. I'm doing quite good with the machine so far. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on what to dig for signals that are one way or on/ off signals i get quite a few where ever i hunt. Also most of the signals are impossible to find when i dig them up. Sensitivity is set at 7 or 8 on coins mode. If any of you have any tips what so ever on coin hunting i would be glad to listen.

:usaflag:It does'nt sound like you need any tips.....seriously... If you turn your sensitivity down to 3 or 4 you would'nt get so many false (or unwanted) signals. What Garrett model are you using?

Think that my tips will help you any. You are doing a lot better than I have been doing. With the amount of great coins that you are finding, then you should be giving me tips.
You are not telling us what kind of sites you are hunting, trashy sites, sites with a lot of iron, highly mineralized ground etc......
One way signals are sometimes deep iron or good targets close to a rejected target that you have chose to disc out. You said that most of the signals are impossible to find when you dig them up. Do you mean that you are not pinpointing correctly or they are so small that you cannot find them.
You need to let us know what Garrett detector you are using and what mode you are hunting in.
You are doing excellent in your finds. Keep this up.

Now that I know what you are using - the 1500 is one of the best coinshooters out there and you seem to be doing quite well so far and seem to be in virgin territory and you may be missing a few coins. I would lower my sensitivity down to 6 or 6.5. Sounds like you may not be pinpointing correctly. Centering the target correctly on a GTI is absolutely critical for accurate readings and recovery of the target. You can't get sloppy with a GTI. You are probably digging false signals or junk targets that you haven't centered correctly. When centering a target watch the signal intensity readings. The cursors at the top of the screen will line up all the way across when you have jockeyed the coil arouind and centered the target correctly.

On the one-way signals use the "twitch" to turn many of them into positive signals. To do this you first center the target under the coil then whip it side to side rapidly about two inches each way. Also scan slow with a GTI as they have just too much information to process and if you scan fast you may be skipping right over good targets. Good luck.

actually iv found that tilled ground is amazing for searching. In the town of Wiscasset, Maine we tilled a lot right in town and found a coin from the 1700's quite amazing since Wiscasset is the deepest harbor north of Boston it was a huge trade port
