coin frequency?:ausflag:

Depends on the size & composition of the coin. Lower conductivity tends toward higher frequencies, higher conductivity tends toward lower frequencies.

Finding at depth or discriminating properly ? Ignoring ground mineralisation to discriminate correctly each metal has a specific frequency at which the discrimination calculation peaks. Silver 0.8 kHz, copper 2.7 KHz, gold 13-15 KHz and nickel at 17 KHz.

I tested one kilo silver bars, gold coins of various sizes and coper/cupro nickel etc in conjunction with Sean from the U.S.and the conclusion was that in general lower frequencies gave better depth but only on larger/thicker targets in higher ground mineralisation and would lose sensitivity on smaller targets.Something to bear in mind if searching for a cache of silver or gold bars.

We read in the forums of people doing quite well on coins with white's XLT around 6khz. Then others doing quite well with the MXT or M6 around 14 khz. or the Prismz around 8khz and the 10khz Tesoros, not to mentions some of the machines around 17khz. I personally think that any decent, competent machine will find coins just fine for the dedicated detectorist, regardless of frequency. It wouldn't make much sense for a manufacturer to put out machines that were BAD on coins other than specialty macnines like prospecting. That said, I'm not arguing that certain frequency ranges don't have a THEORETICAL advantage, but I don't believe we're seeing much of that in the field. JMHO

Hi Blowfly, My machines range from 6 kHz through to 14 KHz, and they all hit Aussie coins well and the US and other foreign coins I've found all register okay (obviously, or I wouldn't have found them, I suppose). My X Terra operates on two frequencies outside that range ( 6 to 14). I have a 3 kHz concentric and a 18.75 DD and have used them both. The 3 kHz does not do at all well on our 5c coins, and even 10c are a bit dodgy; yet it's pretty good on copper and silver. The 18.75 seems to be ok on all our coins, and it really hit very well on a small 9 ct gold ring. I guess it really is horses for courses, and I have a feeling that my 10 kHz Tesoros are about right on the money for our coins. (Please, please forgive me for any puns, intentional or not). Sapper.

Just an addition to the above. Had the X Terra 70 out this am with the 18.75 kHz coil on. Found that the response to our $2 coin, although good, seemed to be slightly slower than say, the 7.5 kHz. Just an observation.

hi sapper,i have a x terra 305,which i bought, because at the time,i couldn't afford the deleon.i've used it a couple of times, but i have found that i prefer sound rather than visual.my two detectors that i use constantly are the vaquero and the silver sabre, they don't tell lies.they hit a good target strongly.the 305 and the compadre hang on the wall waiting for their new owner.the 305 did one good thing for me it saved me from spending a further $500 dollars on a x terra 70,which i alway's thought was the bee's knees in aussie detectors.i'd love to try the deleon, but theirs no local dealer that sells them,so i can't try before i buy.low and really slow is the way to go with a xterra i have found and even then you're not sure what you have found.blowfly.p,s,i have just donned my flack jacket, because they who know it all will be after my blood.
