coin cleaning

is it o.k. 2 clean coins with silver cleaner? does cleaning take away the value? ( like they say on the antiques road show don't clean this and that, u will ruin it)

Any coin that might have high value should never be cleaned with anything. Dan

I clean my coins with running water and a small rub with my fingers and occasionally with a really, really soft tooth brush. If you remove the slight patina or any of the remaining original luster, you have devalued that coin considerably. The only exceptions are if the coin is burnt or has lots of scratches on it, then I clean it more harshly, since it has but little value already!

For coins, non-key dates, that you would rather admire than squirrel away I found a product called The Works
that really "works" on tarnished silver as well as copper or bronze if used separately. You simply put a little in
a plastic bottle cap and soak awhile touching the coin ONLY with fresh cue-tip and toothpick. Have a larger
plastic cap w/distilled water nearby. I wear "Mag-Eyes" and gently go around the coin softly until the desired
effect is reached and then turn coin over and repeat. Never leave over 5 minutes. Rinse in distilled, rerinse and
lay on cotton cloth, turn and hold close to burning light bulb by edge til dry. This is ONLY for coins you want to
keep not sell. This product has never removed lustre from any coin I have tried. If you are like me and I think you
are you have experimented with everything in the pantry sometimes with devastating results. Just try one coin
to see if it truly "Works".,
