Coin Cleaning

I had a good day out and the GB was working well. I found a 1864 2 cent that is in pretty rough shape but what is the best way to clean old coins. I was using the 11dd in an extremely trashy old house site. Tomorrow I will go back with the 5dd to see if I can pick some more out. I found a couple of bullets and rivets and am very impressed with the seperation that the machine is capable of. The ground balance was 71 and had three bars on the dirt meter. I had my F5 with me and its ground balance was 10 points less and it had two dirt bars. The ground where I am hunting is mostly red clay and am hunting in Central VA. I did notice that the GB has such a tight tid compared to the F5 on deeper bullets. The F5 is tight to a point and then falls off to iron where the GB holds its tid much tighter even when it is a whisper. Both machines had the 11dd on. Thanks for any info I can get on cleaning things.

Thanks Bob

I find that that soaking in hydrogen peroxide works the best. Soak it for a few hours and clean with soap and water. Keep doing till clean. Hydrogen Peroxide doesn't damage your coin. It does seem like it dries the coin out and you need to put some oil on it like Olive Oil. I've used Coconut Oil and corn oil too. And after awhile wipe off the oil.

Rich thanks for the info. Here is a couple of pics. I think the GB is really a good relic hunter. I like the tone break that is user defined. It can seperate the goodies from the bad real well. I have never got to try the T2 or the F75 but I still like my F5. The best part of the GB is it so quiet and the stability is great. No fatigue when you hunt with the bug.

By the way I guess if you where in the gound for a 150 years you would not look so good either. At least that is what I am trying to tell my wife.

Finding a 2 cent coin is an awesome fine. a very rare find in my area. A friend found one this summer with the same date. I've never found one.
