Coin Cleaning

New member
Being a newbie, I would like the opinion of the best methods of cleaning coins, clad and silver.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks:thumbup:

I clean my clad with a plastic jar with a screw on lid. I put the coins in the jar, don't mix Penny's with dimes and quarters, add warm water your favorite detergent one or two sos pads, apply lid to jar and shake well. You should not clean a valuable silver coin other than maybe a little warm water. My not so valuable silver coins, I rinse with warm water and rub them with just a small pinch of baking soda with my fingers. Really brings out the shine. I have not heard or found a good way to clean nickels, but would like to hear how some people clean them. Some people say that peroxide is good for cleaning clad. It turned some of my coins black.

can you use an ultrasonic cleaner on the silver coins or a valuable wheat? I mean with out destroying the value.

To clean clad if you have alot of coins get a rock tumbler seperate the pennys from nickles, dimes and qtrs as you can't put them together as the coins will
take on the copper color of the coins and put aquarium graval in to about 1/3 full add some vineger and let it run for about 30 min. it should clean
most of the coins in that amout of time take the clean coins out and rinse in fresh water. add new coins to the jar put the lid back on and go again, silver coins can be put in the ultra sonic cleaner and it works about
50% of the time hope this helps

Hello DigginDaddy, I am brand new to this forum and to metal detecting as well. I also collect coins, and I have had some pretty grungy ones, and believe it or not, when all else has failed, I have put my most difficult ones to clean in a bowl of water and Oxi-Clean. It does a fantastic job on coins I couldn't even read before. It would have done the late Billy Mays proud. I am trying to learn the Prizm 6T. It seems to be a very sensitive MD. I have found aluminum cans 8" down in sand, not that I was going for that. Good Luck!

I use a rock tumbler for all clad and cents, but separate them first. Dont tumble coppers with clads, or the clads will turn orange.

For the many valuable silver coins that chase me down and jump into my pouch on every outing, I don't clean them with more than a toothbrush and mild soap. And I always check the value guides before I do even that.

Just a little safety reminder Don't use a glass jar they can break and cut badly and the mess is nasty.
