Coin Cleaning Question

Blink

Member
At our last club meeting one of our members showed me an 1802 Large Cent that he had cleaned in olive oil and then smeared petroleum jelly on it to bring out the details of the coin. It did look nice and the details stood out nice and clear. My question is, what will the petroleum jelly do to the coin ? I'm sure this would not be a proper procedure if it was a valuable rare coin. I wouldn't do anything with it but clean it in soap and water. Any one have any comments on this procedure. Thanks

Hello what we do in holland it takes time but you can put the coin in to the vaseline for a vieuw months
What also possible is that you buy stomache salt at the apotheker i dont now the english name en then with water en clean the coin fist 5 min en so further

I only use a bath in hot hydrogen peroxide to clean my large copper coins. I do use a bit of Vaseline to preserve the coin and bring out detail as well, but a very small amount or the coin will become greasy. email me if you want more details on the method.

Olive Oil will leach out of the coin for many years.

You can see the results of my cleaning methods on my site.
