coiltek month later

since i have had my coiltek 6 in me and my son have been out many times. trying to get use to the new coil and also kind of comparing it with my son's at pro 5x8 coil. here in se missouri we have not came across any bad soil and the coiltek has detected some pretty deep coins. the at pro 5x8 goes just as deep. neither coil has out done each other in depth. it does hit hard on conductive targets but not anymore than my 10.5 dd coil are my son's 5x8 at pro coil. i did not like the cost of the coiltek coil. the at pro 5x8 cost much less and does every bit as good. not any better but, just as good as the coiltek. the coiltek is just a small coil and does a good job. nothing to brag about. i will keep the coiltek coil and use it often when needed.

Heavy trash, especially iron trash, is where that 6" Coiltek shines. And it's due to it's response on high conductors along with the separation of a 6" DD w/o losing depth that make it a winner.

deep silver is where it will shine

I've had my 6" coil since January, I haven't put a ton of miles on it yet, but I have only found 1 coin with it so far . While the other two in our group have performed well, I find myself having difficulty adjusting to it. This past weekend I discovered that notching out #46 helped greatly. I opened #46 while using my gold pack coil and have had good luck, but the Digger coil doesn't like it. Once notched, I found that I have much less chatter and increased stability.

The other issue that I have been struggling with, and again this was with #46 still live, was I would get a strong #46 signal but when going into pinpoint, it was gone. I have high hopes that notching #46 was the key to starting to find things with it. Mapper65 keeps telling me "when you hit a coin, you'll know it", you surely can't prove that by me at this point as the last few sites that we hit were not very productive.

We hit a site last weekend that had a very old foundation on it, I was too far from they truck at the time, but I would have switched back to my gold pack coil when it didn't produce. My thought was that it may have been a bad idea of all three of us using 6" low freq coils and may have missed targets that maybe a higher freq coil would have found. After all, ground can do funny things based on content.

I'm not giving up on it yet, but I know that when switching from my Tesoro Toltec 100 to my Minelab I struggled similarly. I seem to get in tune with something and struggle to change due to different sounds and patterns.

hotrod did you try going to one of the preset programs then opening it all the way up ... seems to make it a lot more stable ...

Surfchunker.... I typically use pattern 3 which we have edited a bit. At this point, I'm not even sure how close to stock it would be.

I've heard of wrap around issues when opening #46, I'm wondering if that is what was going on.

FWIW, this sentence suggests that you might want to slow down even more and/or turn down your sensitivity a tad. "Chatter" shouldn't exist. I never notch anything more than -8 & 48 regardless of which coil I'm using.

OLH, when I say chatter I am not referring to an oscillation type chatter but like as if I had many targets in the ground. Point well taken that this also could be a result of overpowering the ground, but I'm thinking more on the lines of wrap around.

Wrap around that hits 46 sounds like "high beams in the fog" to me. Try backing off the SENS a bit and see if it doesn't help.
Also, I forgot to ask if you're running any Offset, as it too can have a similar effect if conditions dictate.

No, not running any offset. As far as gain, I rarely run less than 30. 99% of the time it is not an issue in our ground.

HR53,
When I got my Digger I wasn't that impressed. Lot of money for what seemed like little reward. I kept it on and powered through the feeling that it was money wasted.
It hasn't come off since. It really shines in trashy ground and whoever said you would know when it was a coin was right.
Now, my area is known for mining so my GB numbers are usually 15-25. The DD coils work great for me. In fact I traded the stock coil for a 10.5" DD. I can't imagine that milder soil would make that much of a difference in performance, as you said Mapper seems to do well with his.
90% of the time I hunt in AM unless I just am not in the mood to listen to all the noise.
Hang in there, I think you'll be happy with it shortly.

I keep saying that he needs to leave that coil on and just use it. I had some minor struggles at first with that coil but within a short while everything started to click and now I hardly ever take it off of my detector.

I think from time to time we all think that if we are not finding coins that the coins are there and we're just doing something wrong.

We covered a lot of ground the other day that we presumed may have not been detected or if it was, there may have been stuff left behind. I really think this was really one case that there was nothing there. The three of us put in six hours each and with our track records, if it was there, one of us would have found it.

I'm convinced that if there is something there, this coil is going to find it. That was actually only my second time out since I started detecting that I didn't find a coin the entire day.

Yeah if your Mom didn't find anything it must have been void of good targets ...

Yep, and it sure wasn't for not trying...lol!

Where are you Pittsburgh guys from exactly? I am just north of you. Possibly we could get together and do a hunt.

PM sent

Something else you might consider trying is to swap coils with your brother or your mom, to see if there is any difference between detectors or coils. Doing a bit of "head to head" testing on specific targets (pre-dug) could provide some insight. HH Randy

I have to be careful notching out #46 with my coilteck, as it will ring up a silver quarter at either a #44 or #46. Minelab 705. I have had great success with the digger. But all this is subject to settings for me anyway I am fairly new to detecting and always looking to learn. Happy hunting!

For you guys that have notched out 46. My 705 hits silver dollars and halves at 44 and up. I dont run across them very often but I do on occasion. I also dug a great seal bridal rosette from ww1 that hit at 46. I would hate to miss those. I do get an occasional wrap around from iron but its not that sharp, hard coin signal
