Coiltek Coils

What is the best coil to run from the edge of salt water to waist high. Coiltek has the 5x10 and 9 x14. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

The smaller coil is not solid and as a result, tends to float forcing you to press down to keep it on the bottom.

The larger coil is solid like the stock / larger Minelab coils so it is a better water coil but realize that the drag on the larger coil (including the Minelab 17" coil) will be noticeably more than the stock 11" coil. One of the local hunters here snapped his shaft using a 17" coil in the water as a result of the additional drag.

Even with the standard there are time you feel some serious pressure on that shaft. Not certain that anyone right now has been impressed with either in the water. Some had the smaller go south too. The larger is as heavy it seems as the larger ML and there isnt a price savings. In the water..... like most you just cant beat a standard coil.

I have the Coiltek coil. It is a really good coil for the right place. However I do not like it in the water as much as the standard 11 inch coil. I personally like the 6 inch coil in water. The Coiltek has to much drag because it is solid. The six is cut out and smaller. On the sand the Coiltek is a great coil.

I'd trade my 6 inch minelab coil for either of the coiltek ones.

I just got mine yesterday. I haven't tried it yet. It is heavy, I am not sure what the 17" weighs, I think the 14 X 9 might be a few ounces heavier. I am not sure, so don't jump on me. I can't wait to see what it can do.

The key to this answer is dependent on what salt water you are discussing. If it's oceanfront with 2,3,4 foot breaking waves or bay area with 1>2 foot rolling waves the answer varies. I own all these coils. As Andy mentioned, the 5x10 floats and is a pain in the butt. Knee deep or less, it is fine. The 6", 5x10, 11" or 9x14 all work in knee deep or less. Waist deep the 6" or 11" are best for me. In my rough surf I prefer the 10" BBS Excalibur over all the above. I know that is not a part of the question though. In rough open surf, your detector will become a crutch at times and yes I think more than a few shafts have met their demise in the surf. Also coil ears have been broken from the crutch effect. In the Bay area I'm a stock 11" fan. Good luck to yah.

I took the 14 X 9 in the back yard, I am to sick to head out, but had to try it. It is excellent to pinpoint with. I feel it is easier then the 11". When you back your coil off the target in pinpoint mode the target will be right in front of the coil. I will get it out next week to see what it can do.

The 14 x 9 Coiltex coil is a very heavy coil. It is heavier then the 17 inch MineLab coil. I had it out in a park. I wouldn’t use it in a park again without a harness. I think it would be a really good coil for a lake or bay or beach.

Where WEIGHT is an issue,the Pro Swing harness is a real godsend. Using ANYTHING to take some weight off is good,the harness is comfortable to me and works with ALL of my machines. I can not recommend it enough!
I know some of you guys have it, just backing up the Hawk!

The harness is the only way to go with a coil that heavy. My friend was using the 17” coil, I picked his up and mine was heavier. It will be a great water coil.
