Coiltek Coil

I personally would love to have a 15" coil for relic hunting to use on my Exterra 70. If anyone else would like that option, lets send as many emails to Coiltek asking them to build one. If they see there is enough interest in such a coil, maybe they will contact Minelab and work a deal out with them on the use of the chip that is needed to build the coil. Here is their email address, ctmenquiry@coiltekmanufacturing.com.au Thanks to anyone who wants to help in this endeavor. Mark Lehman

Uh, do you think that it can even be done? This detector only uses 4 AA batteries. I would love to have an elliptical DD coil that got a little better depth, but I gotta wonder if the power needs wouldn't exceed what we now have. Also, there's the whole added weight thing.

Mark, you are a man after my own heart as I have been preaching this too. Yes a CoilTek 15" WOT DD for the X-Terra 70 would be a dream come true. I bought a Musksteer Advantage for this purpose so I could use the WOT on it, if a WOT was available for the X-Terra 70 I would not have bought it.

Yes for CoilTek(or Detech) to make a deal with Minelab on the use of the special chip that is needed to build a bigger coil for the X-Terra 70.

I would prefer a rectangular or elliptical 8" or 10" or 12" X 18" or 24" DD coil for the X-Terra 70 instead. How about a 8" X 18" DD or a 12" X 24" DD is my choice BUT round 15" DD would sure be welcome.

Also I was also in contact with Trevor at CoilTek about building a large trolley--drag coil for discriminating VLF's(like 8" to 20" X 40")(Musketeer Advantage, Explorer, E-Trac, Sovereign GT, MXT, or Tesoros) for large farmers fields and homesteads, marking signals with bean bags and hand check later. He said they would do the R&D if there is enough interest and he asked me if anyone else would want one? Would any one else want one so I can relay it back to Trevor ??

I already own a CoilTek 20" X 40" DD coil on a skid for my GP 3000 but it has very poor discrimination being a Pulse Induction.

Do not be shy to contact CoilTek yourself at that E-Mail address above if you also want to give them feedback on a bigger coil that you want made as if enough people ask, they might very well make one as Mark said. They are pioneers and do make aftermarket type of coils like this. You are their customers and they do value feedback as I know, so tell them(CoilTek)!!

I imagine that recent changes to technology (reduction and miniaturization) will allow for a redesign in a year or two if the manufacturers explore their options. The same leaps in technology are about to herald their presence in the world of digital cameras in the coming months. I suspect detectors will follow in due time because some of these marvels are cross-related.

I'm just guessing here but if Minelab haven't offered access to the chips for the X-Terra series by now, there's probably a reason.
The X-70 appears to be one of the biggest selling detector models other than the GPX's at the moment here.

Whilst Coiltek make very good coils (I could be convinced to purchase a large coil from them), their high volume of sales seems to be for GP/GPX/SD coils and they still don't utilize the expensive Minelab "Litz" (high transmission conductance & low impedance) wire for their coil windings. But Coiltek's best strength is their weight (or lack of it). A larger coil would be lost on an X-Terra.. In order to extend the electromagnetic field that the coils output, you'd need to increase the voltage feed of such a (larger) coil. This would result in a heavier/larger battery PLUS a demand for Litz wire in order to keep the power output and consumption economical.

So, since Coiltek don't use Litz wire AND can't utilize the X-chips from Minelab, I'm guessing we won't be getting any 3rd Party coils for the X-Terras in the near future.

If Minelab can't or won't do a bigger coil how about a higher frequency coil for the prospecting mode :detecting:

Thanks, very, very good report Nero, I do not know how voltages work that well, but if you say the X-Terra 70 does not have enough voltage and would need a bigger battery if a larger coil is made for it. BUT how about the MXT which has a 15" X 18" SEF, round 18" EXcelerator, and a Jimmy Sierra--Magnum Force 25" round loop (I use to have one of these for my Whites Eagle) made for the MXT. Does the MXT have that much more voltage and bigger battery than the X-Terra 70 to run these huge coils ?? I cannot see why the X-Terra 70 can't have enough voltage to run either a rectangular or elliptical 8" X 18" or 9" X 18" or 10" X 18" DD coil ?? (This is a size that I would want for my X-Terra 70.)

Or bring on an updated version of the Terra series without the chips so we can use any coil like the explorer series.

The X-Terra gets excellent depth. But the aim of this detector series is to be as light and versatile as possible. As Canewrap said, the MXT uses 8x AA batteries and overall, that unit is heavier. Remember also that larger coils are less sensitive to smaller targets, even though they can penetrate deeper. And 16 khz to 20 khz is usually the optimum frequency range for nuggets (large and small). Hence 18.75 khz is between both those numbers and is felt to be the perfect all-round frequency for nugget hunters. The higher the frequency, more sensitive a coil is to smaller targets. The downside to this is that you must then sacrifice depth and penetration. At lower frequencies, there's often less sensitivity to low-conducting targets that are smaller but the detector can penetrate more deeply. Hence the 3khz coil is popular for those hunting Spanish Silver coins (large ones) in sand.

As Nero said, I think we have to keep in mind the whole weight thing. What I think would be more useful would be a true mid-frequency 10.5 DD (12.5 khz for instance) or a 12 khz 10" concentric. Also, a better ground stand with a little weight built into to it for better balance. If they sold it as an accessory I would buy it. This machine could really use a redesign with a backlight, better balance, and a shorter lower rod as standard. I used an MXT for last two years and I can tell you bigger coils are not all they're cracked up to be. What we need is a well built (reasonably tough), ergonomic design that has enough flexibility for most uses. So far, the X-terra 70 has come closest in my experience, but a few tweeks would be great.
