Coiltek 6" joey

jspoon

New member
I can't decide which way to go, either the 6" DD digger for my X505 or the 6" joey for my GT? I've read lots about the digger, but nothing about has the 6" joey for the GT and what your thoughts are?
Thanks very much HH

I could hardly find any user field reports of the Joey or the Platypus for the BBS units (Sov/Exca) in all my searching a while back while compiling stuff for the coil sticky at the top of the forum, so to me that speaks volumes in some ways. You hear far more about their WOT coil so it's not something to do with Coiltek not being a popular company. If I were you I'd look into two trash coil options for the BBS units- The eight inch Tornado, which is only 7.25" in size so has excellent separation from what I've read and gets very deep, or the 6" Excelerator. This coil though I hear very little about on the BBS units but seems to be the trash coil of choice on the FBS units for great depth and separation. I just wonder how it compares on the FBS units to the 7.25" eight inch Tornado. Perhaps it's the fact that the Excelerator is about half the price that makes it seem even more popular. There is a 5" Excelerator too for the FBS and BBS units, but again you hardly hear of this coil being used on either platform. Well, maybe more on the FBS units but the 6" Excelerator seems to be the favorite over the 5" on those units from what I gather digging through threads and have also been told. Beyond that, you've got the Sun Ray 5.5" S-5, the 8" Sun Ray S-8 (true 8" size I think), or the old solid White 8" Minelab Coinsearch coil which many seem to love. That's about it, besides the 8" Detech concentric (only concentric I know of for the BBS units) or the old heavy BBS 8" coil that the lighter version 8" Tornado replaced. Hope this helps...

PS- There is also the 4.5x7" Detech coil for the BBS units (Sov/Excal), but it's available only over in the UK and I think never was sold here that I know of?

I was mistaken it was the coiltek 5x10 joey...my bad! Your like the wikipitia of the forum, Thanks though

Jim,I had a phone conversation with a guy that used the Joey coil.He liked the coil very stable but stated probably not as deep as the 800 coil great separation his wife used the coil on her Sovereign more than he did.The Platypus coil is interesting ,but haven't heard any feed backs,a Michigan dealer has one for $317.00 would like to hear some feed backs on this 12X8.5 inch coil. I have tried several coils on my Sovereigns since 1996 and for me and my old park, ballfeilds and schools yards some of my favorites are the 8 inch coinsearch coil which makes learning the Sovereign easier and a very deep seeking coil, the S-8 of Sun Rays is also a very good coil as it seems to separate real well in trashier sites and found it worked better for me than any smaller coils I have tried and has fantastic depth. The Joey maybe OK for some, but for me it just didn't do much on the Sovereign, but on the the ones made for the Explorer it worked great and why I say that a brand coil that works good on the Explorer may not work that great on the Sovereigns. This goes for headphones too as my Sovereign I use one brand, but on my Explorer and E-Trac a different brand works better.
On the Sovereign I have used the 8 inch coinsearch, the S-8 of Sun Rays, the 8 inch concentric of Kellyco which I didn't like at all, did a Field test for another company on a 8 inch concentric that was awesome. Tried the S5 of Sun Rays and the 5 inch Excellerator coil plus the Joey for the Sovereign, but sold all of them as it didn't work as good as my others. I used both the early model of the S-12 and the later model of the S-12 of Sun Rays and was very happy with them, tried 2 different WOT coils and let others around me try it and sold it too as we felt the S-12 worked better for us. I had the 8 inch Tornado coil I got from Neil, but never got a chance to use it to see if it was better then the S-8 before someone wanted to buy it. I find the 10 inch Tornado coil that come on the Elite and GT to be the first Minelab coil I liked other than the 8 inch coinsearch. Someday I will try a 10X12 SEF coil if I can to see how it will do as I haven't tried that one yet and would like to get more info from those that know the Sovereigns well and used them in actual hunts and not air test and preburried targets.

Jspoon,i use the little joey coil on my GT and I will not take it off.I use the GT over here in England on ancient sites and it has increased my finds rate on small roman and hammered coins in amongst iron infested sites. It has the benefit of light weight and good ground coverage also.As for depth,i find little difference between this and my stock coil as I seem to be able to use a little more sensitivity with the joey before falsing becomes a problem.Another major plus point is pinpointing which is easy with the joey....it is one of the best coils for pinpointing I have used.....cracking little coil.

After some research I found out they don't have a little joey, however there is a 5x10 joey, is that what your refering to?

One of my future projects here- Going to build a 4x2 super sniper trash coil for my GT. Already have the pre-amp schematic for the RX winding the Sov/Excal has in the coils. Simple circuit and the IC is an off the shelf part and not exclusive to Minelab. A few resistors/capacitors in that simple circuit and that part of it is done. Just have to figure out the proper gauge/length/winds of the windings to get things like resistance with the specs the Sov/Excal expect to see to tune the coil to them properly.

Planning to try to make the coil even smaller if possible, with say less than 4" length. Not sure of the physical limitations of size for a DD coil until I winding the thing and play with it on the work bench. Also have to pin down a source for shielding material for the coil's casing. Various tapes for that or have heard you can salvage the insulation out of some kinds of capacitors.

There are companies that make various coil shells for the do-it-yourself types but doubt they'd have a tiny 4x2 type shell for that, but no big deal- Since it's so tiny don't need a casing with spokes to save weight when filling a coil with epoxy to waterproof it and keep the windings from moving out of alignment. I'm just going to make a 4x2 mold and set the windings in there and make it a solid coil by just filling with epoxy. After that I'm going to spray 4 or 5 coats of spray on bed liner on it to prevent wear and give it a factory-like textured coil casing appearance. Since it's going to be so small not using a spoked casing won't make weight an issue with a solid epoxy pour over the vitals.

I think a coil like this might be fantastic for both super heavy trash and also for getting right up against fences or poles. Tons of silver out there right up against fences and such at old sites that larger coils just can't get near. Anxious to see how my 7.25" eight inch Tornado will let me get close to these things too. I figure a 4x2" coil will outshine pretty much anything out there in length wise separation. I think there are a few 4" coils out there for certain machines, so if I can I'll fudge it to say 3.5" and then even beat those rare coils for length wise unmasking aspects.

With a SEF-style shape of being less wide the DD line should also be pretty sharp for width wise separation. Depth is secondary to me in a sniper coil like this for the extreme of heavy trash, so I don't really care if it only gets say 3 or 4" deep. Plenty of silver and other old coins laying real shallow out there that are just badly masked by junk or iron at "dead" sites. Who knows though, with the 7.25" Tornado I might not see the need to build the thing, but I plan to anyway just to see for sure what the potential might be. Just not sure if I can build a DD this small due to physical limitations and field characteristics that might exclude the ability to do so, but I won't know until I try.

If you notice on the SEF coils, they have a unique shape not seen in even egg shaped coils like them. Notice for one how the two "D" coils overlap each other with a rather unique shape, and not more straight like other DD coils. Then there is the "V" shaped tip and tail of these coils. I'm thinking I might take a picture of a SEF and then shrink it's dimensions down to a 4x2 or whatever, and then lay my windings out pegged to a board in that exact same shape for testing before committing to the lay out with an epoxy pour.

Think it'd be cool to have a SEF that's even smaller than their 8x6, roughly half it's size when you think about it. By the math, if I'm shrinking it exactly half in size then the coil might turn out to be a 4x3 I guess. We'll see how it goes and will post a report and How-To when I do get around it the project here. I'm guessing parts and materials I can probably build it for south of $60 probably, and that would include the coil cable and plug.

Kind'a excited about the potential, and always love to tinker anyway and lose myself for a few hours of projects in the garage with a 6 pack of beer and some good tunes on the radio. In the winter when cabin fever hits, it seems to help to be able to even just get out in the garage. Crank up the propane heater and it's nice and comfortable and I forget for a few hours how nasty it is outside.

First project though with warm weather fast approaching is to do the Plano Box waterproof deal to throw my GT into for water hunting. Need to also wire up a waterproof remote PP switch to my water shaft. My lightweight shaft build is my land rig and I use the stock GT shaft as my water setup. Makes for fast land/water configuration by just taking the GT off the land shaft and throwing into my chest mount bag, or the future Plano box here mounted on a snap on back shaft extension to keep it out of the water for float/drag/risk of leak issues. Even at neck deep it'll still be a few inches out of the water since it's going to be at head height on that back extension.
